Townson, John

Soldier who was transferred to the New South Wales Corps. Shortly after arriving in Sydney he was sent to Norfolk Island, where he was eventually promoted to acting lieutenant-governor in Philip Gidley King's absence. He was an efficient administrator and returned to England after being granted leave. He later returned to Sydney where his ill health curtailed his development of many of his extensive land grants.
