Commemorative plaque that was installed at the Rocks between 1984 and 1988, as part of the Sydney Green Plaques Bicentennial project, on the site of the outbreak of plague in 1900. The text on the plaque read: In 1900 bubonic plague broke out in Sydney. Arthur Payne, a lorry driver at the wharves who lived in a house near this site, was the first person to contract the disease. During cleansing operations much dilapidated housing in this part of The Rocks was demolished.
