Mr Peter Serovich remembers the Austral Progress Association, interviewed in 1986

Mr Peter Serovich was born in Yugoslavia in 1908, came to Australia in 1925, and was interviewed in 1986 for the 'Looking Back at Liverpool: An Oral History of the Liverpool Region 1900 to 1960.' Here he remembers the necessity for a Progress Association for the young and undeveloped suburb of Austral.

INTERVIEWER: You said you joined the Progress Association. What progress did they make?

PETER: Well, they were trying to build the roads up, and get things done, like a school. In those days there was only two little rooms, when we first came here there were two little rooms. They brought another room from La Perouse, so there were three old rooms. Gradually the Parents and Citizens [Association] tried, from the Department of Education, to improve it, and then they built the big room. Gradually they worked it out, and lately they've spent a lot of money on Austral school.
