My Country

An iconic and patriotic poem about Australia. The poem was first published in The Spectator in London under the title Core of My Heart. It is the second stanza which begins 'I Love a sunburnt country/ A land of sweeping plains,/ Of ragged mountain ranges,/ Of droughts and flooding rains' that is best known.

Myee

Late Victorian residence built for solicitor and Mayor of Rockdale John Horatio Clayton. It became a home for babies and young unmarried mothers who had been committed by the Children's Court to state care. Some mothers retained their babies after they left Myee, but many babies were adopted. From 1977 it was used as a home for secondary school aged boys who were considered to have intellectual disabilities.

Nangowrie

Aboriginal man named Nangowrie, or Nangui, from the 'Portland Head' or ‘Lower Branch’ people of the Macdonald River (Gununday) whose Country reached from the upper Macdonald River (Gunanday) downstream to Mangrove Creek and upstream along the Hawkesbury River (Dyarubbin) as far as Portland Head and Cattai. He knew the Reverend John McGarvie and may have acted as his guide in 1829. His name was also written in English as Nangui and Nangoa.

Narellan

Traditional country of the Tharawal and Gundungurra people, the Narellan area was granted to colonists by Governor Macquarie and became a prosperous farming area, though the village remained small, and overshadowed by nearby Camden. From the 1970s, commercial and residential development took place that changed both the village and the surroundings, with extensive new suburbs.

Part of the traditional lands of the Tharawal and Gundungurra people, Narellan Vale is a new suburb on land granted to William Howe and William Hovell in the 1810s. For much of its history, it was dairy farms.

Naremburn

One of the oldest suburbs on the north shore, distinguished by small Federation-style detached cottages in timber or brick. However, the last 30 years have seen an increase in medium density housing developments, and it is now bisected by the Warringah Freeway, completed in 1978 and the Gore Hill Freeway, completed in 1992.
