Woodward, Thomas

Clerk, transported for 14 years in 1817 and freed by servitude in 1831. Found guilty of receiving stolen banknotes following the 1828 Bank of Australia robbery and sentenced to 14 years on Norfolk Island, he returned to Sydney in 1839 and given his freedom in 1840.

Woore, John Chadwick

Police magistrate at Wilcannia, Queanbeyan and the Richard River in the mid-19th century. As the Commissioner for Lands he selected the site for the township of Wilcannia in 1863.  Between 1889 and 1903 he was the City Coroner. He died at his home Tallandra in North Sydney in 1915.

Woore, Thomas

Naval officer, surveyor and pastoralist who worked on his own surveying possibilities for the proposed railway line put forward by the Sydney Tramroad and Railway Company, later Sydney Railway Company. Despite his efforts, he was refused payment for his work and was widely criticised by the company. In 1858, he requested compensation from the government for his work as they were using his plans, but he was unsuccessful.

Wrobel, Elinor

Art collector and curator who helped establish the Powerhouse Museum and also established the John Passmore Museum after the she convinced Passmore not to burn his artworks before his death. In 2009, Wrobel threatened a hunger strike in defence of the Lucy Osborn-Nightingale Foundation Museum at Sydney Hospital. A former nurse at Sydney Hospital, she fought to save the hospital's rare specimen collection.

Wurrgan

Wurrgan, or Worogan, was an Aboriginal woman who lived close to the first settlement. One of the sisters of Bennelong, she was married to Euranabie (Yeranibe). Both spoke English, and the couple sailed down the south coast to Jervis Bay and Bass Strait with James Grant on the Lady Nelson in 1801, acting as advisers, interpreters and liaison with other Aboriginal people met on the voyage.

Wylo, Goomblar

Aboriginal didgeridoo artist and performer who was part of the Stolen Generation. He later worked with homeless children and inmates at some of New South Wales's toughest gaols. His performances of Dreaming stories are often enjoyed by tourists in the Blue Mountains and have been seen in many countries overseas.
