English burlesque actress who performed in musicals and pantomimes while touring the world. She visited Australia several times over the course of her career. She sued The Bulletin in 1901 for suggesting the costume she wore as principal boy in the pantomime Puss in Boots, performed at the Tivoli, was indecent. The jury and judge visited the theatre to see it for themselves, but found for the defendant.

Barnsley, Elizabeth

Convicted of stealing a bolt of muslin valued at six pounds in 1788, Barnsley was transported for seven years. John Nicol described her as 'a noted sharper and shop-lifter' whose family 'for one hundred years back, had been swindlers and highwaymen'. According to Nicol, she petitioned the government agent to wear her own clothes instead of convict dress and she was 'very kind to her fellow convicts, who were poor. They were all anxious to serve her. She was a queen among them'.

The Charlotte medal, Australian earliest colonial art, is believed to have been engraved by him while on board the Charlotte. He was the first man hanged in Sydney after stealing food in February 1788.
