Sylvania

Southern residential suburb, on the southern shore of the Georges River. It is believed to have been named by James Murphy in the nineteenth century because of its 'sylvan' appearance.

Tank Stream Way

Lane which once formed part of Hamilton Street and was renamed in 1981 after much disappeared under the Australia Square complex. Following the same path as the original water source for Sydney it is a reminder of the mangroves and mudflats which previously existed in the area.

Inner-west suburb on the northern bank of Cooks River which grew from the workers camp established to build the Cooks River dam in 1839. By the 1850s it was also home to limeburners, woodsmen and fishermen.

Suburb located north of the central business district on the western shore of Sydney Cove. Characterised by a precinct of restored nineteenth-century buildings which are a major tourist attraction, it was recognised as a separate suburb in 1993.

The Rocks Dig site

Land between Cumberland and Gloucester Streets containing remains from the late 18th century, the time of Australia's first European settlement. Excavations begun in 1994 uncovered over 30 homes and shops built from around 1795, and some 750,000 artefacts.
