F Kanematsu Warehouse, 8 O'Connell Street
Office and warehouse of the Australian branch of the Japanese trading company Katematsu between late 1891 and the 1960s when the building and those alongside were demolished. Established by Japanese entrepreneur Fusajiro Kanematsu in 1890 with an office at 99 Clarence Street to set up trading relationships between Japan and Australia, the company was the first to export Australian wool to Japan. They also exported Australian wheat and tallow to Japan. In exchange they imported Japanese rice, cotton, arts and household goods, using the warehouse as a showroom.
