Thomas Fisher

Thomas Fisher, a bootmaker and property investor, bequeathed a large portion of his estate to the University of Sydney to endow its library. Fisher Library bears his name to this day.

First proposed by William Wentworth in 1848 as an expansion of Sydney College, the university was established via the passage of the University of Sydney Act in 1850 and inaugurated in 1852 before moving to Camperdown in 1859. It is the oldest university in Australia.

The main library at the University of Sydney named for Thomas Fisher, its major benefactor. It opened in 1909 in the south-western corner of the Quadrangle. In 1962 it moved to a new building adjacent to Victoria Park, the original reading room being renamed MacLaurin Hall.

MacLaurin Hall

Gothic Revival hall on the second floor of the University of Sydney quadrangle. Before the construction of the present Fisher Library building in 1962, it was the original Fisher Library reading room.
