In nineteenth-century Sydney, charity protected poor people from starvation and homelessness. The introduction of benefits and pensions in the early and mid-twentieth century made it less crucial, though still important. In recent times, as government outsourced many functions previously been assigned to the state, charity regained some of the influence it had in the nineteenth century.

Education

Education in Sydney started with Aboriginal society and the everyday learning and formal initiation of young Aboriginal people. Institutionalised education came with the Europeans, who first created schools for convicts' children, and later for the children of the new gentry and middle classes. Sydney became the centre of education in the colony, with a university, and eventually in 1880, universal education throughout the suburbs of the growing city.

Major tributary of Sydney Harbour, which flows east from Blacktown Creek to meet Port Jackson between Greenwich and Birchgrove. The river is tidal to Charles Street Weir at Parramatta, 30 kilometres from Sydney Heads.

Female Orphan School

Orphanage set up in 1801 by Governor King to train destitute girls. Originally established on a site near the corner of Bridge and George streets to house 100 girls, by 1829 there were 152 inmates and the fear of moral corruption from its proximity to Sydney town led to a new facility being constructed at Parramatta.
