Pyrmont bridge

The Pyrmont bridge was one of the most technologically advanced swing bridges in the world when it opened in 1902.

Sydney's monorail

Sydney's monorail was opposed from the moment its construction was announced. Derided as an eyesore and an ineffective solution for Sydney's growing transport needs, the passing of the monorail attracted over 1500 passengers for its final journey in July 2013. We explore the history of the monorail Sydney-siders loved to hate.

Cockle Bay

Small bay in Darling Harbour to the west of central Sydney. The bay was an important site for shipping and industry during the nineteenth century.

Darling Harbour

Waterway to the west of the city once surrounded by wharves, goods yards, woolstores and factories which contributed enormously to the city's economic wealth. The former rail lines and goods yards were transformed from commercial port to a recreational and pedestrian precinct in the 1980s.

Pyrmont

Peninsular inner-west suburb between Darling Harbour and Johnston's Bay. Quarried for its sandstone, it later became a heavily industrialised working-class enclave, then gentrified as industry declined.

Pyrmont Bridge 1902

Timber truss bridge constructed with a steel opening span, which was one of the first to be driven by electricity from the Ultimo Powerhouse. The span is still operating smoothly and the bridge has been recognised as a National Engineering Landmark. It is one element of the working harbour that has survived into the post-industrial present.

Monorail

Single loop, elevated monorail connecting Darling Harbour and Sydney's central business district. Always a controversial structure it was finally demolished to allow expansion of the entertainment precinct at Darling Harbour.
