The City of Sydney Archives holds items from as early as 1842 when the Municipal Council of Sydney was established, and manage, preserve and provide access to more than 1 million items, including documents, photographs, maps, plans and data. The collection consists of City of Sydney corporate archives, items collected from the community relating to the City of Sydney local area and published reference material. Published by commercial map makers Higinbotham, Robinson and Harrison in the late nineteenth century, the maps of the Atlas of the Suburbs of Sydney provide a portrait of the city's municipalities during a period of rapid growth and suburbanisation.

Cooks River

River that flows through south-west Sydney, starting at Graf Park, Yagoona, through to Botany Bay at Kyeemagh. The river was extensively polluted by industry and its course was changed to accommodate the runways of Sydney Airport.

Botany

Industrial and residential suburb on the northern shore of Botany Bay, immediately east of Sydney Airport. Originally seen as a country retreat, it saw industry flourish in the post-Second World War era.

Alexandria

Largely industrial inner-city suburb located south of Sydney's central business district, named after Princess Alexandra, wife of Edward, Prince of Wales (later King Edward VII). By the 1940s, it was the nation's largest industrial district, and called itself the "Birmingham of Australia".

Dam constructed by Simeon Lord in the watercourse draining into Botany Bay beside what is now Southern Cross Drive.

Engine Pond

Dam constructed by Simeon Lord on the watercourse draining into Botany Bay. It is now traversed by Southern Cross Drive just east of Sydney Airport runway.
