Bishopthorpe Estate

Part of the original land grant to the Church of England in 1789, the estate was formed when Glebe was subdivided in 1828 and this allotment was retained for the Clergy and School Lands Corporation. Between 1856 and 1874 the estate was subdivided into 238 allotments offered on 99 year leases. Most of the original houses still exist.

Blackett

Western residential suburb which grew from the 1970s as part of the Mount Druitt public housing development. Its name comes from George Blackett, Superintendent of the Government Cattle Station at Rooty Hill during Macquarie's governorship. Many of its streets are named after Australian writers.

Blackheath Aerodrome

Airfield built by unemployed men in 1939 as an alternative safe landing place during World War II. It was eventually abandoned after the licence was cancelled in 1955.

Blacktown

Western suburb on the country of the Darug people, which as 'Blacks' Town' became the site of the short-lived Native Institution in 1823. It was a separate town until suburban development joined it to Sydney in the mid-twentieth century.

Area in Sydney's west governed by Blacktown City Council. Part of the traditional lands of the Darug people, it became known as 'The Blacks Town' in the 1820s when the Native Institution moved there from Parramatta. It is the most populous local government area in NSW and one of the fastest growing.

Blue Mountains local government area

Area of towns and villages on far western edge of Sydney which is 70 per cent national park, governed by Blue Mountains City Council. It incorporates significant parts of the traditional lands of the Gundungarra and Darug tribal groups. Its scenery has made it a popular tourist destination since the late nineteenth century.

Booldoorra

Area on the Hawkesbury River (Dyarubbin) that was identified by the Aboriginal people who were sharing knowledge with the Rev John McGarvie in 1829 as he wrote a list of place names used by the Darug and Darkinyung people along the river. The name probably refers to the kind of tree growing the area at that time, possibly soft corkwood (Caldcluvia paniculosa).

Booralee

Village established in the 1830s by the families which made their livings in the rich fishing grounds of Botany Bay. Few weatherboard cottages remain and the area itself no longer has access to the bay.

Boree Track

Bush road in Yengo National Park that began as an Aboriginal pathway. It runs from Boree Arm at the northern end of Wallambine, St Albans Common northwards to Big Boree and beyond, branching as the Boree Valley Road to Yengo in the west and Corobare/Wollombi in the east as it approaches the Hunter catchment. It was a major route and songline from the Hawkesbury River (Dyarubbin) via the Macdonald River (Gunanday) to Kukyun, the Hunter River.  Boree, a grassy oasis in the sandstone labyrinth, on the Boree track to Yengo, was a long-remembered corroboree ground.
