Leumeah

South-western residential suburb bordering Campbelltown. Its name, from a Tharawal word meaning 'here I rest', was originally given to a farm established in 1876.

Leura

Dharug country for thousands of years before the Europeans arrived in the area in 1813, Leura's early development was based on the railway that passed over the mountains in 1867. By the 1880s large houses were being built there, and tourism boomed in the 1900s. Leura's gardens, trees, views and heritage buildings make it a popular tourist destination.

Upper Blue Mountains residential suburb adjacent to Katoomba. It is known as a 'garden village' with a largely intact early twentieth century shopping centre along Leura Mall.

Sculptor and construction engineer who often worked on joint commissions with his wife Margo.

Lewers, Margo

Artist and designer who worked in a variety of mediums including painting, textiles, sculpture and mosaic. She often worked on commissions with her husband Gerald. After their deaths, their home in Emu Plains was given to the Penrity City Council and became the Penrith Regional Gallery & The Lewers Bequest.

Lewin, John William

Australia's first professional artist, who also published Australia's first illustrated book 'Birds of New South Wales' in 1813. He also worked as the colonial coroner from 1810 until his death in 1819.

Lewin, John William

Australia's first professional artist. A talented artist with an interest in scientific studies, Lewin decided to travel to Australia to paint its natural history. He arrived in Sydney in 1800 and was encouraged by patrons including Governor Philip Gidley King, Governor Lachlan Macquarie, William Paterson and Sir Joseph Banks. He published Australia's first illustrated book 'Birds of New South Wales' in 1813. In 1810 Governor Lachlan Macquarie appointed him to the role of coroner in the town of Sydney and of the County of Cumberland, which he held until his death in 1819. The headstone to his grave was moved from the Devonshire Street Cemetery to Pioneer Memorial Park in Botany Cemetery in 1976.

Lewis Wolfe Levy Fountain

Drinking fountain in the Royal Botanic Gardens, with a red granite base with Art Nouveau bronze statue of a young girl standing amid reeds, a heron and frogs. The fountain was a gift to the people of Sydney  in 1889from the Levy family in memory of Lewis Wofle Levy (1815–85), politician and businessman. The statue, by C B Birch (1832–93), is an important example of aestheticism in Sydney.

Lewisham

Cadigal country until large grants were given to settlers in the early colony, Lewisham remained timbered and rural until the mid-nineteenth century. Its Catholic church, cemetery and hospital dominated one side of the suburb, and were the site of an air crash in 1946 when two staff were killed.

Eight span stone arch viaduct over Long Cove Creek built in 1855 for the Sydney to Parramatta Railway. It was replaced in 1886 by a Whipple truss railway bridge.
