Elegant thirty-two storey modernist office block designed by architect Ken Woolley in the 1960s to house the state government offices. The building occupied the block between Bent, Phillip and Macquarie Streets where the Government Printing Office and the Australian Subscription Library buildings had previously stood. The double sided New South Wales coat of arms in the building's lift lobby had been cast in oxidised bronze by sculptor Bert Flugelman. The demolition of the State Office Block in 1997 upset many Australian architects who claimed it was a very fine example of mid-1960s modernist architecture but it had been deemed unfit for purpose.
