Going on ahead

One of the many joys of working on the Dictionary of Sydney is the opportunity/excuse to revisit favourite pictures and collections as we look for the right images to illustrate an entry. Another is following up the unexpected stories and connections as we check details and confirm spellings.The collection of studio portraits of local Parramatta residents, ca. 1860-1872 by Henry William Burgin II in the Mitchell Library at the State Library of NSW (PXA 1036) is one such favourite, and one of the more unusual of these is this 'trick' photo of A.

As of December 2016, the Dictionary of Sydney office is no longer based at Benledi House on Glebe Point Road. We are sad to be leaving our fellow Benledi residents and this great community, and encourage you all to head down Glebe Point Road to check out the newly refurbished Glebe Library, wander through the gorgeous St Helen's community garden, get a delicious poppyseed danish from a local cafe and visit one of the loveliest florists in the city.

The Modern St Patrick: or, Parkes's 'Man-Goose' at the Museum, Sydney Punch, 22 February 1868, p 95 (courtesy State Library of NSW)Last year we came across this cartoon from Sydney Punch in 1868 of Henry Parkes titled 'The Modern St Patrick; or, Parkes's "man-goose" at the Museum'.As St Patrick is traditionally credited with the removal of all the snakes from Ireland, we initially assumed that casting the anti-Catholic, anti-Irish Parkes in that role referred to him driving out some kind of metaphorical political or religious snakes from New South Wales (especially given his government's recent unpopular declaration that St Patrick'

The Mad Dentist of Wynyard Square

Henry Louis Bertrand c1865 Source: Mitchell Library, State Library of NSW (c011220001 / P2/468)This week on 2SER Breakfast with Nic Healey, Nicole shared author John Edwards's Dictionary entry on Henry Louis Bertrand, the dentist of Wynyard Square whose murderous & amorous activities scandalised Sydney in the 1860s.Henry Bertrand was born in 1840 in Mayfair, London, into a Jewish family which had a long tradition of practicing dentisty on both sides of the Channel. His father, Henry Lipschutz, had adopted the surname Bertrand at some point, and died when the boy was about four.
