Castle Hill convict rebellion 1804

Tied closely to the 1798 rebellion in Ireland, and sparked by news of further uprisings in Ireland in 1803, the Castle Hill rebellion was a serious threat to the government of New South Wales and was quickly crushed.

Hyde Park

Part of the common land reserved by Governor Phillip for the town's use in 1792, Hyde Park was proclaimed by Macquarie in 1810, and became a racecourse, cricket ground and open space. Without trees until 1854, in later years plantings, civic monuments, paths and buildings were all placed in the park. When the City Circle railway loop was built in the 1920s the whole park was dug up and reconstruction work included planting many of the trees that are still there.

Irish National Association

Founded in 1915 with the aim of rallying the Irish-Australian community behind the cause of Irish sovereignty, the INA has fostered Sydney's Irish heritage for nearly a century, despite political difficulties and changes in Irish migration.

Macquarie Place

In the early nineteenth century Macquarie Place was the administrative and business hub of Sydney. Today traces of its long history can be found in the monuments, relics and old trees which still remain.

Prince Alfred Park

First known to Europeans as Cleveland Paddocks, the area that became Prince Alfred Park was gazetted as a public reserve in 1865, and called after Prince Alfred during his ill-fated visit in 1868. Exhibition buildings were built in the park in 1870, lasting until 1954, and elements of the original park plan, including Moreton Bay fig trees along the boundaries, still remain.

Sydney Park: kangaroo ground to brickpits

The site now occupied by Sydney Park was a kangaroo ground for the Gadigal and Wangal before being granted to emancipated First Fleet convict Elizabeth Needham in 1796. In the nineteenth century it became a site for brick making and other industries before being converted to a rubbish tip in the 1940s.

Wentworth Park

Originally a swamp at the mouth of Blackwattle Creek, Wentworth Park has seen noxious industries, community celebrations, army camps and wool stores, and many sporting activities. Since the 1930s greyhound racing has dominated the park.

Wynyard Park

Once a parade ground for the army barracks, Wynyard Park has been open space since before Europeans arrived. During the second half of the nineteenth century it was an elegant residential square with a park in the middle. From the 1880s, it has been a public transport hub.
