Cameron, Michaela Ann

Michaela Ann Cameron is a PhD candidate in the Department of History at the University of Sydney specialising in the sensory history of colonial America, specifically Indigenous auditory cultures. Prince Alfred Park, Parramatta

In colonial times, the area known today as Prince Alfred Park contained the colony's gaol and was known as 'the Gaol Green' and 'the Hanging Green.' Regular public punishments occurred there until the 1840s when the gaol moved to a new location and the area became a public reserve. A visit by the Duke of Edinburgh in the 1860s saw the area renamed Alfred Square. The park took on grander elements in the twentieth century, eventually transforming into the vibrant civic space it is today.

Western suburb built on the land of the Burramattagal people. Sydney's second European settlement, it began as a government farm in 1788 and has many heritage listed sites. It is now the commercial hub of Greater Western Sydney.

Prince Alfred Park Parramatta

Park which was the site of Parramatta's first gaols and the venue for punishments and executions in the early days of settlement.

Anderson Fountain

Fountain which was moved to Prince Alfred Park from near the old town hall. It commemorates Dr Mathew Anderson, a surgeon, who arrived in 1827 to take up the post of Colonial Government Surgeon. He campaigned tirelessly for public access to fresh and continuous water supply and drinking fountains.
