Mulhearn, Phil

Phil Mulhearn, before his retirement, was an oceanographer with the Defence Science and Technology Organisation. From 2004 to 2018 he held honorary appointments at University of Sydney, most recently at the School of Geosciences. He plans to fully retire in the near future.

Chipping Norton Lakes

Interconnected lakes on the Georges River at Chipping Norton which were created as part of a rehabilitation in the late 1970s after sandmining in the area had caused extensive damage. The lakes and surrounding parklands are managed by Liverpool City Council.

Liverpool

South-western suburb based around the town founded by Governor Lachlan Macquarie in 1810, which remained a satellite town of Sydney until suburban development incorporated it into the city in the mid-twentieth century.

Chipping Norton

Suburb to the east of Liverpool named for the homestead of William Alexander Long, who had lived in the market town near Oxford in England. Since 1977, areas formerly used for sand mining have been rehabilitated as the Chipping Norton Lakes.

Georges River

River that rises at Appin in the upland swamps of the O'Hares Creek catchment, and flows 80 kilometres north and east to meet Botany Bay at Taren Point, in Sydney's southern suburbs. The total catchment is over 930 square kilometres managed by a large number of local government authorities and is the main tributary of Botany Bay.
