Aboriginal politics to 1945

In the first half of the twentieth century, Aboriginal people in Sydney used all the tools of organised political protest to protect their land and their children. The depredations of the Aborigines Protection Board in the late nineteenth century inspired this political revolt.

Mount Hunter

Long inhabited by the Tharawal, Gundungurra and Cubbitch-barta people, the area that became Mount Hunter was later a prime dairying area with a thriving village community. The dairy farms are gone, but Mount Hunter retains its rural feel.

Narellan

Traditional country of the Tharawal and Gundungurra people, the Narellan area was granted to colonists by Governor Macquarie and became a prosperous farming area, though the village remained small, and overshadowed by nearby Camden. From the 1970s, commercial and residential development took place that changed both the village and the surroundings, with extensive new suburbs.

Appin massacre

The ongoing dispossession of the Aboriginal people who lived on the Cumberland Plain by white settlers lead to ongoing violence and assaults. The government ordered reprisals by the military included the massacre of at least 14 Aboriginal people near Appin in 1816.

Echo Point

Situated in Gundungurra and Darug country, Echo Point emerged as a major tourist destination in the 1920s and today attracts around 1.4 million visitors a year. Combining a 'holiday playground' atmosphere with the sublime, Echo Point is a compelling site for thinking about the many different ways of seeing that have shaped the Blue Mountains landscape: Indigenous, Romantic, commercial and environmental.
