Andrew (Boy) Charlton Pool

A natural bathing place used by Aboriginal people, this site has had a series of swimming pools built on it since European settlement. Since 1968 the pool has commemorated one of Australia's greatest swimmers, Andrew (Boy) Charlton.

Art Gallery of New South Wales

Built to house the colony's collection of art, purchased from 1874, the Gallery has been on the site in the Domain from 1884, and in the current building, and its series of extensions, from 1896.

East Circular Quay

The area that is now East Circular Quay was quickly seen as the governor's side of Sydney Cove after colonisation in 1788. The first house built on the point belonged to Bennelong. When the semi-circular quay was constructed from 1837, the eastern side of the bay was used as a quarry. From the 1860s, wool stores and warehouses were built that dominated the landscape until after World War II, when taller buildings were allowed.

Fort Denison

Originally a rocky island used as a place of punishment for convicts, Fort Denison was built over and renamed when fortifications were constructed there in the mid-nineteenth century in an attempt to protect the city from seaborne invasion. Though the fort was never used for that purpose, it has collected tidal and meteorological information since it was built.

Religion

Religion has had a profound influence on the geography, culture, politics, and artistic life of Sydney. While religion has mostly been a conservative force, preserving traditions transported from home societies, it has also reflected the setting and people of Sydney, its harbour, bushland and suburbs.

Sport

Sport has long been important in Sydney life, interwoven with its fabric and culture. The ritual contests and physical activity of the Aboriginal people gave way to the informal, disreputable and often cruel pastimes of the early nineteenth century. The late nineteenth century saw the development of formal codes and organised leagues, leading to the commercialised, professional sports of the present.

Woolloomooloo

Woolloomooloo's chequered history includes its past as a Gadigal hunting ground and ceremonial space, its subsequent use for farming and country housing for Sydney's elite, and its evolution into an area of workers cottages and maritime industry. From the 1970s new residents joined with unions and locals to preserve Woolloomooloo from developers.

The Domain

Set aside as part of the Governor's demesne by Governor Phillip, the Domain was formalised by Governor Macquarie in 1816, and has been a people's park, cultural precinct and the scene of political action and dissent ever since.

Sydney

Founded by Europeans as a social experiment, Sydney's beginnings brought death and dispossession to the original inhabitants of the place, as well as surprising freedom and prosperity to many of the convicts. Over its history, the city's growth has been shaped by factors that are common to many cities, but also by unique forces. In the twenty-first century, for the first time, the idea of sustainable progress is itself in doubt.

Green, James

Painter, glazier, oil and colour merchant, James Green was a good lodge man and an alderman on the Sydney City council for over a decade.

Charting the Sydney Harbour Shoreline

The first charts of the shoreline of Sydney Harbour were drawn within days of the arrival of the First Fleet and surveys continued into the nineteenth century. This article compares the shorelines of four surveys with maps of the modern shoreline of Sydney Harbour, revealing the steady improvement in surveying accuracy over the eighteenth and nineteen centuries and the changing shape of Sydney Harbour

McElhone Stairs

McElhone Stairs in Woollomooloo is one of three stairways that connect Brougham Street to Victoria Street the others being Hordern Stairs and Butler Stairs). The wide variety of experiences encountered on the stairs, from the arduous nature of the climb, the vibrant and colourful users, the sexual encounters and the physical dangers have given them a special place in Sydney's artistic history.

Butler Stairs

Stairways such as Butler Stairs were part of the Sydney City Council’s Victorian infrastructure boom, and the sophisticated level to which these stairways are detailed shows a level of civic pride and financial investment in pedestrian infrastructure that had not been undertaken previously in the city.
