Browne, John Vincent
Horse racing figure who left his birthplace, the town of Moruya in New South Wales, in his twenties for Sydney allegedly with a horse and 50 pounds 'concealed in the lining of his vest'. He settled in Randwick in 1884 and eventually acquired a block of land extending from Alison Road, Avoca Street to Albert Street. He also built and owned the Royal Hotel, Randwick before passing it to his brother Thomas, and owned and lived in the Coach and Horses Hotel, Randwick.
