Beard Watson Limited

Once Sydney's most exclusive furnishing store, with custom-designed furniture and fabrics, Beard Watson Limited dominated the high end of Sydney furniture retailing from the end of the nineteenth century until the 1960s.

Bebarfald's

Once a giant in furniture retailing, with a full scale house on display on the second floor of its city building, Bebarfald's was a complete home furnishing and decoration store. Like others, its business declined once suburban shopping centres took off after the 1950s.

F Lassetter and Co

Developing in the 1850s out of a blacksmith's business established in 1820, Lassetter's dominated the retailing of affordable household goods in its huge stores until the 1920s. Known as 'Cheapside', the stores carried thousands of lines and employed hundreds of Sydneysiders.

Grace Brothers

A mainstay of Sydney shopping from the 1880s, Grace Bros was in the forefront of changes in retailing throughout the twentieth century.

Marcus Clark and Co

Established as a draper in Newtown, Marcus Clark and Co went on to become one of Sydney's best known stores, with numerous buildings at Railway Square, and a wide range of goods.

Mark Foy's

Established in Oxford Street in the 1880s, Mark Foy's became one of Sydney's leading stores, with a grand store in Liverpool Street and a wide range of departments.
