Horton, Allan Roy
Allan Horton's career spanned both archives and librarianship. He joined the then Public Library of New South Wales in 1944 and was appointed Archives Officer in 1953. He moved to the University of New South Wales as Associate Librarian in 1960. He succeeded John Metcalfe as University Librarian in 1965 and retired in 1988. Active in his profession he held various offices in the Library Association of Australia and in the Australian Advisory Council on Bibliographical Services. In 1976 he served as Chairman of the federal government's Committee of Inquiry into Public Libraries. The Library Association of Australia awarded him a Fellowship in 1969 and the HCL Anderson Award in 1979. In 1989 the University of New South Wales conferred an honorary D.Litt for his services to the University and to his profession.
