Reddington, John
Irish publican on Pitt Street who had come to Australia as a convict on the Minerva in 1800 after being sentenced to transportation in March 1798 for his part in the 1798 Irish rebellion. He was also a substantial landowner with land grants in Penrith, and the Clerk of Sydney Race Course. The Roman Catholics of Sydney met regularly at his premises, and continued to do so after his death. In a meeting there in May 1820, Mass was first celebrated in Australia.
