Stephen, Sidney James

English lawyer who practiced in the West Indies before arriving in Sydney in 1828 to join his father, John Stephen, and family. He practiced in Sydney and Hobart, but after a dispute with Henry Montagu, was disbarred, when he went to Victoria. After the disbarrment was overturned by the Privy Council in 1847, he was appointed to the bench in New Zealand.
