Bex Powders

Bex Powders, or Bex APC, were over-the-counter painkillers developed by Beckers Pty Ltd in Adelaide in the 1930s and manufactured in Sydney from the 1960s. Although there were a number of similar products on the market Bex Powders were so popular the brand became a cultural icon. The powders, which were often overused, were found to cause cancer and kidney failure and were banned in the 1970s.

A compound analgesic that comprised aspirin, phenacetin and caffeine produced from the 1920s by Beckers Pty Ltd. All APC compounds were banned in 1977 after the discovery of its harmful effects.

Soul Pattinson Chemist

Three storey Italianate style retail building which has been occupied by the same business since it was destroyed by fire and rebuilt in 1886. It retains the original signs and winged phoenix on the facade and Victorian cast iron columns and mosaic tiles in the retail area.

Pharmacy company established by Caleb Soul and his son Washington. Since 1886 it has operated at the same address at 158-160 Pitt Street. Until 1903 the companies operated separately as Pattinson and Co. and Washington H. Soul and Co.

Chemist, druggist and dentist who was also an alderman and church deacon. The suburb Forest Lodge was named after the villa he had built there in the 1830s for his family, and a local street is named after him.

Pharmacist and local politician who also served as the Deputy City Coroner for Sydney until his death in 1895.

Wilson, Louisa

First woman to study Pharmacy at the University of Sydney in 1900. In 1902 Wilson became the first academically trained woman to register as a pharmacist in New South Wales and went into business in Killara. She died in 1919 during the flu epidemic.
