Zoological and Botanical Gardens

Auburn Botanic Gardens

A former dump along the Duck River bank, the Auburn Botanic Gardens were designed by Eric Black, chief engineer of Auburn Council. They include a Japanese garden, native landscapes and a lake.

Chinese Garden of Friendship

Built on the site of the NSW Fresh Food and Ice Company, the Chinese Garden was a Bicentennial project, opened in 1988.

Maiden, Joseph

Botanist, curator, writer and teacher, Joseph Maiden brought knowledge about Australia's plants into the public realm through his influence on the collections and programs of the Technological Museum and the Botanic Gardens and his emphasis on the creation of useful and practical science.

Margaret Flockton at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Sydney

Margaret Flockton made an enormous contribution to early Australian botanical illustration and taxonomy in her role as the first botanical illustrator at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Sydney. Flockton is finally being given the lasting credit due to her, joining the ranks of other acclaimed, first illustrators such as Marianne of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew

Mount Annan

Traditionally owned by the Dharawal and Gundungurra people, the new suburb of Mount Annan is built on land once owned by William Howe, who named the hill after his home town in Scotland. The property was run as a dairy farm until 1978, with land released for housing in the late 1980s. A series of estates have been released aimed at different markets, and new shopping centres have sprung up. The suburb also includes Mount Annan Botanic Garden.

Royal Botanic Gardens

Planted on land set aside for the governor's demesne, the Botanic Gardens began as kitchen gardens but by the 1840s were already filled with many native and exotic trees and plants for propagation, study and experiment. from the 1850s, the Gardens were laid out according to Victorian principles of garden design, with elements that still give the place a Victorian air.

Wuganmagulya (Farm Cove)

Mosaic by artist Brenda L Croft set into the path at Farm Cove which commemorates historical and contemporary presence of local Indigenous people who travelled great distances to attend ceremonies here. The figures depict Sydney rock carvings.

National Herbarium of New South Wales

The state reference library of 1.2 million preserved plants in the Royal Botanic Gardens. Established by Charles Moore, Director of the Gardens, in the 1850s and officially opened in 1901.

The Royal Botanic Gardens & Domain Trust is a statutory body established under the Royal Botanic Gardens and Domain Trust Act 1980 which is responsible for the management and stewardship of the Royal Botanic Garden, the Domain, the Australian Botanic Garden Mount Annan and the Blue Mountains Botanic Garden Mount Tomah.

Swain Gardens

Gardens built by Mick Swain between the 1940s and 1960s, subsequently owned by the National Trust of Australia (New South Wales) and Ku-ring-gai Council. The gardens are open to the public and supported by the Friends of Swain Gardens.

Taronga Zoo

Zoo on Sydney's north shore, opened in 1916, which housed the animals from the earlier Moore Park Zoo, and developed new attractions. From the 1970s the zoo focused more on education and research than entertainment.

Zoological Gardens Moore Park

Zoo opened at Billy Goat Swamp in Moore Park, now the site of Sydney Boys and Sydney Girls high schools. When the site became too small the government granted land north of the harbour. The original bear pit can still be seen beside Anzac Parade.

(Asked for something different as a cabaret turn, Paula Pratt agreed to do a snake dance, faced problem of buying a snake. She went to La Perouse (near Sydney), where snake expert George Cann of Taronga Park Zoo sold her a 7ft diamond snake for 25/-. She named him Algie, trained him as her dancing partner.)
