Residential building

Annie Wyatt House

Annie Wyatt, a founder of the National Trust (NSW), lived here from 1926, and the unofficial first meeting of the trust was held in the house in 1945.

Bidura

As the primary hub for child welfare in Sydney, Bidura is a place shared by members of the Stolen Generations and Forgotten Australians and is remembered by them with little fondness.

Bishopscourt

Bishopscourt, which has served as the residence of the Anglican Archbishop of Sydney since 1911, is one of the finest houses in Darling Point, and one of the best Gothic picturesque houses in Australia.

Brislington

Brislington is Parramatta's oldest existing dwelling house and stands on land once used by the Darug-speaking Burramatta people. Initially a family residence, Brislington was a medical practice for almost a hundred years, followed by the Parramatta District Hospital's Nurses' Home up until the 1970s. Since 1983 the building has been home to the Brislington Medical and Nursing Museum.

Cadman's cottage

Possibly designed by Francis Greenway, Cadman's cottage housed John Cadman, government coxswain, from 1827 until 1845. It was subsequently used by the Water Police and the Sydney Sailors' Home, and is now a museum.

Clairvaux House

By the early twentieth century many of Sydney's old estates were subdivided. Their large grounds were too expensive to maintain and as Sydney expanded, land became a premium. Clairvaux House, a grand Victorian house, was built on land purchased from the Wentworth Estate c 1871. A domestic residence until the early twentieth century, the house underwent three subdivisions before being demolished in 1929.

First Government House

A two-storey brick house, Government House was the most impressive building in the early colony. It was not well-built however, and required frequent repairs. Plans to replace it were first suggested in 1817, but the new Government House was not completed until 1845.

Forty years of the Elsie Refuge for Women and Children

Elsie Refuge, in Glebe, is an icon of Sydney feminism and Australian domestic violence services. Established in 1974 by Women's Liberation, it was the first refuge for women and children organised on feminist principles and was pivotal to the recognition of the social problem of domestic violence. In 2014, after changes to government funding arrangements, Elsie is no longer independently-run, but the story of the foundation of this pioneering service is a vital part of the history of Glebe, of Sydney, and of Australian feminism.

Glenhurst

Glenhurst was built on the Glenhurst Estate in Darling Point. It was demolished in 1959 or 1960 and replaced by Glenhurst Gardens apartment building.

Glenrock

Glenrock, the home of the Smith and Whistler Smith families from the 1840s, was replaced by a later building that is, along with Fiona, now part of Ascham.

Government House

From a modest cottage on Sydney Cove to an elaborate sandstone structure in Gothic Revival style, Government House, now in The Domain, has served as both home and host to official life in Sydney.

Housing Sydney

From harbourside mansion to fringe estate, housing in Sydney provides indispensable insights into the city's social makeup, economic foundations and cultural identity.

Juniper Hall

Built on the ridge at Paddington, with views to the harbour and Botany Bay, Juniper Hall was the home of wealthy distiller and ex-convict Robert Cooper, and his large family. It was later used as a school, public building and court, and later subdivided into flats, before the National Trust of Australia (NSW) bought and restored it.

Killarney Castle

Opened by Governor Davidson in 1918, Killarney castle at Gordon was built from local stone for Thomas Taylor to replicate an Irish castle.

Lindesay and Carthona

Lindesay, built between 1834 and 1836 for Colonial Treasure Campbell Drummond Riddell, is the oldest surviving residence in Darling Point. It was the home of Surveyor-General Thomas Mitchell in 1841 while he built Carthona. The houses have since passed through the hands of a number of notable Darling Point residents and although the grounds of both have been subdivided, remain significant elements of the harbourside landscape.

Mona and Greenoaks

Mona at Darling Point was built as a regency villa in 1841. It has been converted to an apartment building. Greenoaks, built from 1846 and developed into a gothic revival mansion in the 1860s, was renamed Bishopscourt after it was purchased by the Anglican Church in 1910.

Mount Adelaide

Mount Adelaide, one of the early residences in Darling Point, was demolished in 1912. Its site is now occupied by Babworth House.

Reynolds' cottages

Built by convict labour in 1829, Reynolds' cottages have been used for many different purposes as the city around them changed and grew.

Roseneath Cottage

Roseneath, an elegant Colonial Georgian style residence, was built between 1835 and 1837 as a family home for Scottish emigrant, Janet Templeton and her children. Overlooking the northern section of Parramatta Park (formerly Governor's Domain), the building housed several private schools in the latter half of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

Rouse Hill Estate

Built on Dharug land, Rouse Hill Estate was established in the 1810s, and held by the same family until 1993. Extensive gardens and agricultural buildings surround the house, which was added to over the years, though the original land was sold off. The house and gardens remain, now preserved by the Historic Houses Trust as a museum.

Royleston

Royleston, like the nearby girls' institution, Bidura, served as a depot for children in the New South Wales Government child welfare system from 1922 until 1983 providing temporary accommodation for children in transit between children's court hearings, foster care and institutions. For many members of the Stolen Generations and Forgotten Australians, it was a harsh and loveless place.

Tarmons

Built for Sir Maurice O'Connell, Commander of Forces for NSW, in 1838, Tarmons was the scene of society balls and occasions before it was bought in 1855 by the Sisters of Charity as a convent and hospital, becoming the headquarters for the order in Sydney. It was demolished in the 1960s.

The Private Schools of Roseneath Cottage

Built between 1835 and 1837 as a private family residence, Roseneath Cottage in Parramatta became home to several private schools in the latter half of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries including: Mr Baly's Boarding Establishment for Young Gentlemen; Mrs Mary W M'Ghie's Educational Establishment, a 'first-class boarding school for young ladies'; and St Ronan's, a 'High Class Day and Boarding School for Girls', the bud from which Tara Anglican School for Girls bloomed.

Mrs Linda [Lyndon] Popple was born in 1901 and was interviewed in 1986 for the 'Looking Back at Liverpool: An Oral History of the Liverpool Region 1900 to 1960.' She moved to Liverpool in 1914 from the alpine town of Cooma in New South Wales. She talks here about a grand historical residence in Liverpool: Horningsea Park.

Ultimo House

Demolished in 1932, Ultimo House was then claimed to be Sydney's oldest residence. It had been one of the most prestigious houses in the colony.

Varuna

Varuna, in Katoomba, was the home of Eleanor and Eric Dark. In 1989, with one of the most generous individual philanthropic gestures in Australia's literary history, their son Mick Dark gave the house and land to the Eleanor Dark Foundation so it could be used as a place for writers to work, and to discuss ideas around the fireplace, as it had been in his parents' time.

Victoria Barracks

Victoria Barracks, on what is now Oxford Street in Paddington, has been continuously occupied by military personnel since it was built in 1841. It is an outstanding example of colonial military architecture.

Yaralla estate

One of Sydney's grandest estates, and a centre of high society into the 1920s, Yaralla was the home of Thomas and Eadith Walker, noted philanthropists.

Yarra Bay House

Yarra Bay House, originally built at La Perouse as a cable station, served as a NSW Government children's home from around 1917 until the 1980s. Since 1984 it has been owned by the La Perouse Local Aboriginal Land Council and has been the hub of the La Perouse Aboriginal community.

Yasmar

Yasmar is a rare surviving example of a mid-nineteenth century great house and garden. The estate had only three owners before it was transferred to government control during World War II, and has been empty since 1994.

Conveyancing (Strata Titles) Act 1961

Legislation to facilitate the subdivision of land into lots by registering a strata thereby allowing the lots to be leased or sold individually.

Archina Randwick

Two-storey Federation house originally owned and occupied by Captain A J Clark and his wife. It was then sold to Clarice E P Barwick in 1908 who sold it to Patrick Ryan in 1910. Archibald Shaw then purchased the property and made radio equipment for Douglas Mawson's expedition in a shed, now demolished, located at the rear of the property. The property was then sold to the Commonwealth Government in 1916 and it was used to house Royal Australian Air Force engineers.

Ascot Randwick

Two-storey late Victorian mansion in Randwick which was built by Philip Nicolle who lived there with his family. The house was then occupied by William Thow and then Archibald Shaw. Shaw experimented with wireless transmissions and built a large factory at the rear of the mansion, which has since been demolished. 'Archina' on Avoca Street also formed part of the site and in 1917 it was acquired by the Commonwealth Government for use by the Royal Australian Navy. From 1924, the Royal Australian Air Force set up an experimental station on the land. Ascot was used as a design office and residence for Lawrence Wackett and Archina housed the engineers. In 1932, it was converted to accommodation for Army officers and their families.

Aspinall House

Built in 1883 for Joshua Frey Josephson who named it St Killian's, the construction included some elements like a staircase and marble hall tiles from his former home Enmore House. It was converted to a boarding school house when Scots College moved to Bellevue Hill in 1895 and renamed after Arthur Aspinall, the school's first principal.

Grand Victorian mansion on the corner of Glebe Point and Wigram Roads in Glebe, built for timber merchant Alexander Kethel. It was later converted to a homeopathic hospital and general community hospital. It is now owned by the City of Sydney and houses the Glebe branch of the public library and other community groups. The adjacent park was the site of the Sydney Hospital for Sick Children, founded in 1880. This was renamed the Royal Alexandra Hospital for Children in 1904 and moved to Camperdown in 1907. The hospital building was also used by the homeopathic hospital before it was razed for the park in 1968.

From the 1920s the house was used as a girls' home and children's court whilst a remand centre was constructed at the rear in 1980 to facilitate the operation of Bidura Children's Court. A grand mansion in Randwick that was the official residence of the Anglican Bishop of Sydney. Constructed in 1859 for a total of 7,000 pounds, it was built for Bishop Frederic Barker. The official residence was moved to Bishopscourt, Darling Point in 1911 and the mansion was sold to the Good Samaritan order of Catholic nuns to operate as a convent until it was destroyed by fire in 1924. From the 1890s, the name Bishopscourt was used to describe the area and subsequent subdivisions of the estate.

Gothic Revival style mansion at the core of a large villa estate with a magnificent garden. Built of sandstone around an existing cottage it was substantially enlarged to include a chapel and grand staircase with stained glass windows. It has been home of Sydney's Anglican Archbishops since 1911.

Bleak House, Balmain

Sandstone house in Balmain built in 1850 by Samuel Crook on land overlooking Johnston's Bay, now the site of White Bay Container Facility. The property was named Bleak House by Crook after the book by Dickens due to lengthy legal settlements concerning the land. The house had fallen into disrepair and been demolished by 1902.

Blenheim House Randwick

The sandstone and cedar two storey house was built by Simeon Pearce on 1.6 hectares of land overlooking what is today Randwick Racecourse. The first Anglican church service was held at Blenheim House during Pearce's residency and it was also allegedly the site for the last foxhunt in Sydney. It was purchased by Randwick Council in 1984 and in 1989, a 'Friends of Blenheim House' group formed to help aid its restoration. The group leased the building from the council for 25 years in 1993.

Blues Point Tower

Apartment block which was the only element of a high density development plan for the area which was built. Often criticised, it is now listed on the North Sydney heritage register. It contains 144 apartments over 25 levels and is 83 metres high.

Bomera

Marine villa of two storeys at Potts Point built to take advantage of the harbour views. It was acquired by the government in 1910 and used as a boarding house until 1941 when it was acquired by the Navy. It reverted to private ownership in 2001 and has now been converted to 3 apartments.

Single storey stone house in Randwick on the corner of Belmore Road and Avoca Street that was built for musician Isaac Nathan in 1853 and named for his English friend and collaborator, Lord Byron. The house was demolished in 1912 after the death of then owner James Robertson and the estate was subdivided. By 1911, a different house in Byron Street, Coogee, built in the 1870s, had also been named Byron Lodge.

Residence built by Joseph Hyde Potts in Potts Point. During James Martin's ownership, its surrounding garden was famed as one of the 'most architecturally elaborate gardens constructed in Australia'. The gardens were developed in 1853-68 and the novelist Anthony Trollope described the 'garden falling down to the sea' as a 'fairyland'. Its monument of Lysicrates was later moved to the Royal Botanic Garden, Sydney. The property was acquired by the Royal Australian Navy in 1941 and then subsequently destroyed, however, elements of the original garden have survived. The navy base HMAS Kuttabul now stands on the site, located adjacent to the Garden Island dockyard.

Cliffbrook Coogee site

Mansion in Coogee famed for its location on the original estate of John Thompson, Mayor of Randwick. The original mansion on Thompson's estate is believed to have been built during the 1860s. In 1881 the estate was subdivided in seven sections and the main mansion was sold in 1887. However, after Denison Miller occupied the mansion rent free from 1905, he purchased the entire estate for 8,000 pounds in 1911 and demolished the original stone buildings. In 1921, he then built the Federation, Free Classical style mansion. It was eventually sold to the federal government and used as a school of tropical medicine by the Army Reserve during World War II. It was demolished in 1976 to make way for housing development.

Corona and Hygeia Randwick

Pair of semi-detached mansions designed in the late Victoria style located on Avoca Street, Randwick. The site of Corona and Hygeia is part of an original land grant purchased in 1853 by Judge Thomas Callaghan. His widow, Elizabeth and daughter Mary Milford Auber Jones, built the two large attached houses. From 1894-97 only one of the houses was occupied and in 1895-98 it was used as a house and post office. In 1925 Hygeia was listed as flats and in November 1984 the property was sold at auction. A Permanent Conservation Order was made over the property on 22 January 1988 and it was transferred to the State Heritage Register in 1999. The building is currently a boutique hotel.

Glen Mervyn

Residence constructed for the meat supplier, Thomas Field. Field gave it to the Australian Red Cross on condition that it be used for philanthropic or charitable purposes. The Red Cross operated a convalescent home there for ex-servicemen of World War II, opening on 12 December 1942. It was then leased to Sydney Legacy at a token cost for use as a hostel for orphaned children of servicemen. In 1973 Legacy handed the property back to the Red Cross and the following year it opened as a Junior Red Cross Home. It now operates as a day care centre.

Goldsbrough Mort Woolstore

Woolstores have occupied this site since the 1880s as the boom in wool exports began, using hydraulic goods and passenger lifts. When the original store, with its own railway siding, burnt down in 1935 it was quickly replaced in 1936 and it operated until the 1970s when brokers relocated to Yennora. In 1995 it reopened as residential apartments.

Two-storey Victorian style sandstone mansion in Vaucluse. John Reeve purchased the land from William Charles Wentworth and commissioned John Hilly to build the property. It was completed at a cost of 5,000 pounds. He and his wife never lived there. In 1897, the property was severely damaged by fire and then completely rebuilt. In 1911, the property was transferred to public ownership and given over by the state government for use as a hospital for babies and then a mothercraft centre. It was added to the Sydney Harbour National Park in 1978.

Known as the oldest farmhouse in Randwick, the two storey Georgian cottage was built by George Hooper and originally situated on 15 acres of land which he purchased for market gardens and orchards. It was built of local sandstone and after Hooper moved to Queensland, the cottage remained the property of his descendents until the late 1970s. In 1980 an interim conservation order was placed on the property, and in 1999 it was transferred to the State Heritage Register.

Judge's House Kent Street

Elegant home at 531 Kent Street that was built for surveyor William Harper in 1827. It is the only example of an 1820s Colonial Georgian single storey bungalow to survive in the city. It was leased to the judge James Dowling from 1828 until 1831. In 1879 the house was sold to the City Night Refuge and Soup Kitchen trustees, who had been leasing the property since 1868. In the 1970s some of the outbuildings were demolished and the house sold to commercial owners and converted for use as a restaurant.

Juniper Hall

Built as 'the finest house in Sydney' this two storey Georgian home of eight rooms had a cellar, stables and servant's quarters. Known between 1831 and 1945 as Ormond House. By 1852 it was a home for destitute children and then a children's court. Almost demolished in 1921,a public outcry saw it redeveloped for commercial use with shops replacing front garden which were only removed in the late 1980s. It is now used as partial residence and gallery after the Moran family took a 99 year lease in 2012.

Kalouan

Mansion in Rozelle with 20 rooms, stables and a coachouse that stood on land that is now part of Rozelle Hospital. Built by the Deputy Surveyor General Captain Samuel Augustus Perry in 1840-1844 and named Austenham (Perry's first estate, also named Austenham, was subdivided and this house built with the proceeds). It was bought by David Ramsay in 1863 and renamed Kalouan, taken from the given names of three of his children - Kathleen, Louise and Ann. In 1878 it was bought by businessman John Keep, owner of the adjacent Broughton Hall, and renamed Broughton Villa. It was demolished in 1932 to make way for a new ward building for the Broughton Hall Psychiatric Clinic.

Designed by architects Halligan & Wilton, it was one of the first apartment blocks in Sydney, and featured two balconies and bathrooms in each of the 16 units. A cedar staircase, electric light and wood panelling and passenger lifts were also features. The building predated other the exclusive apartments which shaped the area in the 1920s and 1930s.

Ocean View Coogee

Federation style mansion with views of the Gordons Bay and Coogee Bay area. It was built by Philip Wirth and is one of the few surviving large residences in the Coogee area. Each of the six bedrooms had an ensuite bathroom, one of the earliest homes in Sydney to have such facilities. The once extensive grounds around the mansion housed a private zoo, and it is rumoured one of the Wirth's Circus' most famous performers, Alice the elephant, is buried in its grounds. The home stayed with the Wirth family until it was sold in 2009 for five million dollars.

Old Manse Farm, Pitt Town

Single storey Georgian brick farmhouse built c1819-1821 on Punt Road, Pitt Town. It was purchased in 1828 as a manse for the Reverend John McGarvie, the first incumbent of the Ebenezer Presbyterian Church. The punt across the river was part of the property. The house was damaged in the floods of 1867 but repaired and remained in use as a manse for another ten years. Leased to a farmer after 1877, the building was sold by the church in 1959. It is the earliest surviving Australian housing used by clergy.

Sandgate Cottage Randwick

Two-storey sandstone cottage built by Simeon Pearce as part of a row of five investment properties, its first tenant was Edwin Penfold. It had several names before it was acquired by the Commonwealth Government in 1918 and became the 'Woodville Red Cross home' for World War I veterans. In 1928 Catherine and Harold Tippler purchased it and owned it until 1966 after which it changed hands numerous times before it was restored in 1987 by Randwick Council. It housed the Randwick and District Historical Society's museum and archives collection and was a Heritage Centre for the municipality until 1992. It is now a real estate agent office.

Star and Garter Inn Randwick

One of the earliest hotels in Randwick, the former Star and Garter Inn building became known for its distinctive castellated sandstone tower. Built at the corner of Avoca Street and Belmore Road by the alderman, William Ellis, it was then acquired by Captain Thomas Watson, a Sydney Harbour pilot who added the tower in the 1870s to enable views to Botany Bay. He named his home 'Cook's Lodge'. After his death, it became a private girls' school until the Hannan family purchased it in 1897 and operated a butchery until 1985. The building was extensively refurbished in 1987 and it now operates as a pub.

Strathfield House

Two storey brick residence with a lodge, stables and other outbuildings on The Boulevarde at Strathfield. The suburb was named after the house when the Council was incorporated in 1885.

Georgian building at 16 O'Connell Street, on the corner of Hunter Street Parramatta. Erected as an inn it served many purposes over the centuries including use as a hostel for homeless men by the 1890s. With the two buildings at 12 and 14 O'Connell Street, it forms the Travellers Rest Inn Group.

Tuckers House

House at Medlow Bath which existed before the development of the Hydro Majestic Hotel. It had been owned by Alfred Tucker, whose widow later ran the Wonderland Park guesthouse to the north of the gatekeeper's cottage.

Tulloona

Grand mansion built in Burwood in 1875 for iron founder John Robert Bubb. It was remodelled by Alban Joseph Riley for his large family in the 1880s. The house in Park Road, was saved from demolition in the 1980s and restored.

Tusculum

Two storey Regency villa which originally had a frontage to Woolloomooloo Bay and could be seen from Sydney Town. Constructed of stuccoed brickwork, it has cedar interiors, marble flooring and French doors opening to wide verandahs and is one of few colonial villas to survive.

Student apartments which were converted from an ornate three storey hotel which had lost its license in 1953. The site had been occupied by a hotel since the 1830s. Outside is a fountain commemorating the 50th anniversary of Glebe Municipality in 1909.
The original hotel built on the site in 1858 had been demolished by 1882.

Vaucluse House

Large Gothic-style residence surrounded by a nineteenth-century garden and outhouses on the harbour in Sydney's eastern suburbs. The original cottage was built by Irish convict Henry Browne Hayes in 1805, and he named it and the estate Vaucluse after the village of Fontaine-de-Vaucluse near Avignon in southern France. The house was greatly expanded by William Charles Wentworth after he purchased the estate in 1827. It is now a house museum run by the Historic Houses Trust.

Victorian Georgian stone house at 11-19 Queens Avenue, Mount Wilson that was built for industrialist Jesse Gregson in 1880. The house is one of the foundation houses of Mount Wilson, and the significant garden was created by Gregson with the help of Charles Moore and then J.H. Maiden.

Home first established on Victoria Street, Darlinghurst to cater for foundlings and to provide accommodation for unmarried mothers and their babies. Two years after it was founded, one of its supporters, Thomas Walker, suggested the home be moved to larger premises, a house called 'Gorton' on Henry Street, Ashfield.

Accommodation for migrants established by the Commonwealth government after World War II. It was more recently converted to a detention centre for people awaiting deportation from Australia.

Mrs Linda [Lyndon] Popple was born in 1901 and was interviewed in 1986 for the 'Looking Back at Liverpool: An Oral History of the Liverpool Region 1900 to 1960.' She moved to Liverpool in 1914 from the alpine town of Cooma in New South Wales. She talks here about a grand historical residence in Liverpool: Horningsea Park.

LINDA: My uncle lived here when we came here, he came from Bega, and he bought all Horningsea Park. There might be five or ten acres with it [now] but it was hundreds of acres [then] and there's big stone gates and I think it's 'HP': Horningsea Park on the stone gates as you go in. My mother's brother came there from Bega, he and auntie Annie, to live, and they bought it in 1908 I think it would be, and lived there and she never liked it. But that's old Horningsea Park built by the convicts but it's all been renovated. Some relations used to go there for school holidays, to Uncle Joe's, that was before we came here to live.

INTERVIEWER: Why didn't your aunt like living there?

LINDA: She just didn't like it. They'd been used to a big old country home but I think it had about three hundred acres of land with it then and they sold it and went to Chatswood and I think they ended up going to Bega or Cooma. They had a lot of land near Berridale, near the snow, because they had plenty of money.

INTERVIEWER: Did it have a reputation for being haunted, or not?

LINDA: Yes, it did have. And I've love to get a photo because now you can see it. They've cut a lot of the old pine trees that were dying away and you can see it stands out. It's only two and a half miles from the Cross Roads Hotel. You can't miss it, it's a huge place.
