Parramatta and Black Town Native Institutions

The Parramatta and Black Town Native Institutions existed from 1814 till 1829 as part of a campaign initially led by Governor Lachlan Macquarie and designed to inculcate European ideas of 'civilisation', commerce and Christianity into Aboriginal people and turn them into industrious workers.

Parramatta

Western suburb built on the land of the Burramattagal people. Sydney's second European settlement, it began as a government farm in 1788 and has many heritage listed sites. It is now the commercial hub of Greater Western Sydney.

Native Conference Parramatta

Conference convened by Governor Macquarie as a means of exerting his authority without force. The first was held on 28 December 1814 in the market place where beef and beer were provided, and continued annually for several years.

St John's Anglican Cathedral Parramatta

Church built on the oldest continuously used church site in Australia. The original church used by Samuel Marsden was built between 1799 and 1802. The towers were added in 1819, the nave and chancel between 1852 and 1855 and the transepts added in 1883 after the original church had been demolished.
