The City of Sydney Archives holds items from as early as 1842 when the Municipal Council of Sydney was established, and manage, preserve and provide access to more than 1 million items, including documents, photographs, maps, plans and data. The collection consists of City of Sydney corporate archives, items collected from the community relating to the City of Sydney local area and published reference material. While children have always comprised a substantial proportion of the overall population of Sydney, their voices are absent or muffled in many historical records. State intervention in the lives of European and Indigenous children has been constant in Sydney since the colonial period, but children's daily experiences have also been shaped by their families, cultures and surroundings.

Redfern

Inner-city suburb located immediately south of the central business district whose sandhills were first settled by Chinese market gardeners and later by Aboriginal people who migrated to work in the local factories. Today it is a rich blend of public housing, renovated terraces, light industry and arts precincts.
