The road east

The first track east to South Head followed the path Aboriginal people had travelled for thousands of years, but soon became a cleared road and later a paved street.

Bondi Junction

Busy eastern suburbs commercial centre, with a rail and bus interchange and high rise development. Known as 'Tea Gardens' until the construction of the tram line from Darlinghurst in the 1880s.

Street running south-east from Sydney's centre as far as Bondi Junction, along the line of a Aboriginal walking track, which became an important commercial area and was renamed after the famous London shopping street. Originally part of South Head Road built in 1811, this section was renamed in 1875.
