Katoomba

Built on the traditional land of the Gundungurra people, the settlement on the western road over the mountains was a lonely outpost until the 1870s when it was named Katoomba and became a mining and tourist town. With the advent of the motor car, Katoomba became even more popular with holiday makers and honeymooners, as well as residents willing to commute to Sydney by train.

Lawson, William

Explorer, pastoralist and settler, William Lawson came to Sydney as a soldier, but stayed to become one of the most successful farmers and animal breeders in the colony.

Blue Mountains

Part of the Great Dividing Range west of Sydney, reaching a height of 1100 metres. In 1829 the name for the area used by the local Aboriginal people was recorded as being Colomatta .

Explorer, barrister, landowner and author who championed the emancipists and free settlers and campaigned for radical political reform.

Nepean River

River that rises in the southern highlands of New South Wales and curls round greater Sydney, becoming the Hawkesbury River near Yarramundi. Several dams on the river and its tributaries help supply water for Sydney.
