From a fine stream to an industrial watercourse

As Sydney expanded in the nineteenth century the picturesque waterways and valleys of the Cooks River were to host a network of waterworks and rail and road infrastructure that were to degrade the landscape forever.

Botany

Industrial and residential suburb on the northern shore of Botany Bay, immediately east of Sydney Airport. Originally seen as a country retreat, it saw industry flourish in the post-Second World War era.

Sydenham

Small inner-west suburb named after the district in London. Becoming an industrial and residential suburb after the railway came through in 1884, it was partially depopulated by the aircraft noise of Sydney Airport during the 1990s.

Botany Goods Line

Freight line that runs from Marrickville to Port Botany. After the proposal for the line being approved by the New South Wales Parliament in 1913, work commenced on the line in 1915 then ceased in 1917 before beginning again in 1921. The line opened in October 1925 and was extended in 1929 to provide access to the Bunnerong Power Stations.
