City of Sydney Archives

The City of Sydney Archives holds items from as early as 1842 when the Municipal Council of Sydney was established, and manage, preserve and provide access to more than 1 million items, including documents, photographs, maps, plans and data. The collection consists of City of Sydney corporate archives, items collected from the community relating to the City of Sydney local area and published reference material. Glebe Courthouse

Glebe Courthouse was built in 1889 in recognition of a growing Sydney metropolitan area. However, its use as a courthouse was frustrated by the government's refusal to appoint additional stipendiary magistrates.

Inner-city suburb named for its original status as Anglican church land granted to Richard Johnson, chaplain of the first fleet in 1790. The Glebe Point area became fashionable in the nineteenth century, while the southern part of Glebe became a working class district.

Victorian Italianate style courthouse of modest proportions to suit the middle-class, suburban context of Glebe.
