State Archives & Records New South Wales

Statutory body established by the State Records Act 1998. The Act provides for the creation, management and protection of the records of public offices of the State and for public access to those records.

Based at Kingswood, State Archives and Records NSW manage and provide access to the New South Wales State archives collection, a unique and irreplaceable part of Australia's cultural heritage dating back to 1788.

 

The Bridge Street Affray

On 2 February 1894 three men attempted to rob the offices of the Union Steamship Company on Bridge Street in the city. Several police constables were brutally attacked and injured when they confronted the thieves. Officers of the New South Wales Police have carried firearms ever since.

Incident on Bridge Street in the early hours of Friday 2 February 1894 in which three men, who had tried to rob the Union Steamship Company's offices, attacked and injured several police officers in the pursuit. Five police officers were seriously injured and two of the robbers were subsequently hanged. As a result of the incident, police in New South Wales were authorised to carry firearms in the line of duty.

Professional criminal and burglar who was hanged after his participation in the Bridge Street Affray in 1894. He had only recently arrived in Sydney from Melbourne where he had served time in Pentridge Prison.
