Henry, Lucien

French artist who arrived in Sydney in 1879 after leaving New Caledonia, where he had been exiled as a Communard. He was instrumental in developing the use of Australian native flora and fauna in the decorative and visual arts.

Freed from incarceration in New Caledonia for his revolutionary activities in the Paris Commune, Lucian Henry built a new life in Sydney as an artist, teacher and advocate for native Australian motifs in the decorative arts.

War-Atah: Australian Legend

Book by Lucien Henry published on his return to Paris in 1891 by English language publisher, Neal's Library. The book is fictional, allegedly a retelling of an Aboriginal legend about the origin of the waratah flower. Also referred to as 'Australian Legend: The Waratah' or 'The Legend of the Waratah'.
