Berala

Traditional country of the Wangal clan, Berala was divided into farm lots after the Europeans came, and the forest was largely cleared for timber and charcoal. Dairy and poultry farms and market gardens began to give way to housing after the railway arrived in 1912, and suburbanisation intensified after World War I.

Botanica and Lidcombe Hospital

Lidcombe Hospital was a large institution of a kind common in the nineteenth century. As the focus of care changed over time, men, women, the aged, influenza victims, surgical patients and others were looked after there. The piggery, dairy, vegetable gardens and poultry run sustained the inmates until the 1950s.

Homebush Bay

Originally the land of the Wangal clan, Homebush Bay emerged from the industrial pollution of the twentieth century with the construction of Sydney Olympic Park and one of Sydney's newest suburbs.

Liberty Plains

Wangal country for thousands of years, land in the area that became known as Liberty Plains was granted to settlers from 1793. The area included land that has since become the suburbs of Lidcombe, Auburn, Newington and Homebush Bay. Population grew slowly, and in the 1830s, highway robberty was still happening in this rural area. The name Liberty Plains fell out of use during the nineteenth century.

Lidcombe

Standing on Dharug land, Lidcombe was settled by 1828 with ex-convicts and free settlers on small grants. With the railway, stockyards and abbatoirs, and the large cemetery, prosperity came to what was then Rookwood. In the twentieth century, industrial development and decline, and new migration have changed the face of the suburb.

Funeral trains

By the 1840s, Sydney's Devonshire Street cemetery was nearing capacity so planning commenced for a new cemetery at Haslems Creek. From 1867 through to 1948, a branch from the Parramatta to Sydney line brought mourners and coffins into the Rookwood Necropolis, with grand sandstone mortuary stations at both ends.
