McCarthy, Frederick

Anthropologist and archaeologist who had a long career starting at the age of 14 at the Australian Museum. His research was based on aboriginal prehistory and archaeology of Australia. He extensively recorded and photographed ethnographic aspects of aboriginal communities he visited. He also campaigned for the preservation of Aboriginal rock art and engravings. He was Foundation Principal of the Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies.
