Salter, George
Emancipist who had been transported for his part in a smuggling ring. He was sentenced to be hanged and delivered to a surgeon for dissection at the Devon Assizes on 17 March 1788. While his relatives and accomplices were executed, Salter's sentence was commuted. After being granted 30 acres of land on the riverbank at Parramatta in 1796, he established a successful farm and when that was purchased by the government he was appointed Superintendant of Government Stock in Van Deimen's Land.
