Simes, Thomas

A utility actor, he was never a star of theatre. He became the first Australian costume designer and also worked in theatre management. The Sydney Herald commented on 12 October 1846 that 'Mr Simes has injured his health by the exertions made by him in his multifarious occupations of manager, wardrobe-keeper, etc.' That evening, a farewell benefit was hosted at the Royal Victoria Theatre in his honour, as a financial show of support for his young family.
