Bushranger

Dunn, John

Eldest of nine children of convicts Michael and Margaret Dunn who joined Ben Halls gang in 1864. In January 1865, he shot dead Constable Samuel Nelson in the bungled robbery of Kimberleys Inn at Collector, near Goulburn. He was hanged at Darlinghurst Gaol aged 19.

Gardiner, Frank

Bushranger who regularly escaped custody and was eventually sentenced to 32 years hard labour. An appeal for mercy and his subsequent exile led to the fall of Parkes's government in 1875.

Con man and bushranger who was tried and hanged in Sydney in 1880. His alias as a bushranger was Captain Moonlite, or Moonlight.

Ward, Frederick Wordsworth

Bushranger who is reputed to have been involved in over 80 major hold-ups and robberies, and famously escaped by swimming from Cockatoo Island in 1863.
