Australian Subscription Library and Reading Room

Building on the corner of Bent and Macquarie Streets constructed in 1845 to house the Australian Subscription Library. The subscription library ran into financial difficulties and was taken over by the state government to became the Sydney Free Public Library in 1869. An addition to the building was made in the 1880s as the collection and number of readers grew. In 1895 the name changed again to the Public Library of New South Wales. The  Public Library collection and staff moved to the new extension of the Mitchell Library building in June 1942. The building on Bent Street was demolished in 1969.

Fisher Library

The main library at the University of Sydney named for Thomas Fisher, its major benefactor. It opened in 1909 in the south-western corner of the Quadrangle. In 1962 it moved to a new building adjacent to Victoria Park, the original reading room being renamed MacLaurin Hall.

Jessie Street National Womens Library

Specialist library dedicated to the preservation of Australian women's work, words and history.

Macquarie University Library

Library constructed in four stages between 1967 and 1978 in the Brutalist style. A new library was opened on a different site on campus in 2011. The old library building is a multi-use learning space

The Mitchell Library building was erected in 1910 to house David Scott Mitchell's collection of Australiana which he had bequeathed to the people of New South Wales. In 1942 the building was extended and incorporated the New South Wales government's Free Public Library. The Mitchell Library is part of the State Library of New South Wales.

Newtown Library

Salvation Army hall built for the Newtown Corp which had been formed in 1883. It became the Newtown Library branch of the South Sydney Council Library in 1995, and part of the City of Sydney Library in 2004.

Originally the Northbridge Presbyterian Church, the building was remodelled and opened as a library in 2010.

North Sydney public library opened in 1964 and named for Alderman James Stanton who was Mayor of North Sydney 1937-39 and a keen supporter of free public libraries.

State Library of New South Wales building

Complex comprising the State Reference Library and the Mitchell Library buildings on Macquarie Street. The sandstone Mitchell wing opened in 1910 and was extended in 1942 to incorporate the New South Wales government's Free Public Library. The Macquarie Street wing where the State Reference Library is housed opened in 1988.
