Allen, Thomas

Millwright sent to Sydney in 1792 by the British Home Office to work as master miller for the colony. He had previously been employed at King's Mill, Rotherhithe on the Thames.

Millwright and carpenter who arrived in Sydney as a convict on the Friendship in the First Fleet. He designed and built a successful functional grinding mill, using a treadmill model operated by 9 men in March 1794.

Dodds, Alexander

Auctioneer in Maitland, politician and early landowner in the Naremburn area. With his brother James he was involved with two flour milling companies, Dodds Blacket & Aird, and Dodds & Davies.

Grose, Joseph Hickey

Merchant and steamship owner who supplied wheat to the government stores in the 1820s, owned Grose's wharf at the foot of Bathurst Street, and later managed the adjacent Victoria Mills.

Architect and businessman who was Colonial Architect 1832-35. He resigned to become a partner with James Barker as Barker & Hallen Flour Mill. He terminated his partnership in the firm in 1842.

Singleton, Benjamin

Settler and miller who came to Sydney with his parents and brothers after his father was transported in 1791. He built water mills to grind wheat for the government stores and helped open up the Hunter Valley for farming. The town of Singleton in the Hunter is on part of his original grant.

Thorp, James

Master millwright from Surrey who arrived in Sydney in early 1793. Employed by the British governement to work as a miller in the colony for three years, he and fellow millwright Thomas Allen were based at Parramatta. Thorp returned to England in 1796
