702 ABC Sydney
First full-time radio station in Australia, established as 2SB, broadcasting from the Smith's Weekly building in Phillip Street, and later incorporated into the ABC as 2BL.
Sydney Ports Corporation
State government authority responsible for marine safety, regulation of commercial and recreational boating and oversight of port operations and heritage. Known until 1995 as the Maritime Services Board.
Museum of Sydney
Purpose built museum designed to conserve the archaeology of the site of the First Government House which includes exposed drains and artefacts found during the excavations.
Sydney Desalination Plant
Desalination plant opened in 2010 which uses reverse osmosis filtration membranes to remove salt from seawater and is powered using 100 percent renewable energy from a wind farm at Bungendore.
Sydney University Press
Established in 1962 by the University, it became an imprint of Oxford University Press from 1987 until the mid 1990's. It was restarted in 2003 as a digital and print "on demand" publisher.
HMAS Sydney III
The first aircraft carrier of the Royal Australian Navy commissioned in England in 1948 which saw action as a troop transport in the Korean and Vietnam conflicts. It was sold for scrap in 1975.
Sydney Fish Markets
Fish market comprising port facilities, auction room, wholesale and retail markets, and cooking school. It offers the most efficient means of trading fish as well as a tourist mecca and dining venue.
Sydney Homeopathic Hospital
Homeopathic hospital founded in Redfern in 1902 before moving to Glebe in 1915, where it also operated as the local cottage hospital. It closed in 1989 and a Homeopathy Clinic was transferred to Balmain Hospital.
Sydney Tramway Museum
Australia's largest tram museum which has been operating since 1950. Volunteer run, it is based in Loftus and operates over 3km of track including the old Royal National Park line.
HMAS Sydney II
Light cruiser commissioned in England in 1935 which saw service in the Mediterranean and as convoy escort off the Australian coast before being sunk by the German cruiser Kormoran in 1941 with the loss of all crew.
Smith, Sydney Ure
Publisher and artist who sought to incorporate quality art and design with technically advanced printing in the advertising agency he founded in 1906 with Harry Julius. He also established the publishing company Art in Australia Ltd in 1920.
Sydney Ragged Schools
Private philanthropic schools established in the inner city to provide moral care and education to destitute children and their parents. Social reformism gave way to evangelism before the depression years forced a return to the social concerns of earlier years.
