Adaptive reuse

Arthouse Hotel

Built as the library, hall and rooms for the Sydney Mechanics' School of Arts, and long a centre of cultural life in Sydney, the Arthouse Hotel was converted into a pub in the 1990s.

Bidura

As the primary hub for child welfare in Sydney, Bidura is a place shared by members of the Stolen Generations and Forgotten Australians and is remembered by them with little fondness.

Brislington

Brislington is Parramatta's oldest existing dwelling house and stands on land once used by the Darug-speaking Burramatta people. Initially a family residence, Brislington was a medical practice for almost a hundred years, followed by the Parramatta District Hospital's Nurses' Home up until the 1970s. Since 1983 the building has been home to the Brislington Medical and Nursing Museum.

Casula Powerhouse: Celebrating Art, Community and Cultural Diversity

From a pleasure garden and riverside retreat to a heavily polluting industrial power station and flourishing arts centre, the history of Casula Powerhouse is a celebration of culture, diversity and community identity.

Customs House

Designed and redesigned by three government architects, Customs House has presided over Circular Quay since 1845. It has always been a government building, although its functions have changed over time.

Hyde Park Barracks

From convict barracks to female immigration depot to asylum for destitute women, Hyde Park Barracks has witnessed and revealed much of Sydney's social history.

Museum of Contemporary Art

Housed in an Art Deco building constructed for the Maritime Services Board in the 1940s, the Museum of Contemporary Art is based on the Power collection of contemporary art, gathered by John Power, and maintained at the University of Sydney until premises could be found for it.

Queen Victoria Building

One of Sydney City Council's big projects in the late nineteenth century, ostensibly built to replace the old central markets, the Queen Victoria Building was never really intended to be used as markets, and contained 200 shops under one roof. Later used as council offices and a library, the building was restored to retail use in the 1980s.

Reynolds' cottages

Built by convict labour in 1829, Reynolds' cottages have been used for many different purposes as the city around them changed and grew.

Royleston

Royleston, like the nearby girls' institution, Bidura, served as a depot for children in the New South Wales Government child welfare system from 1922 until 1983 providing temporary accommodation for children in transit between children's court hearings, foster care and institutions. For many members of the Stolen Generations and Forgotten Australians, it was a harsh and loveless place.

Tarmons

Built for Sir Maurice O'Connell, Commander of Forces for NSW, in 1838, Tarmons was the scene of society balls and occasions before it was bought in 1855 by the Sisters of Charity as a convent and hospital, becoming the headquarters for the order in Sydney. It was demolished in the 1960s.

The Harbour End

When The Wharf opened its doors in January 1985, Vivian Fraser's sensitive renovation, with its respect for the past and embrace of the modern, won universal acclaim. As a venue, The Wharf epitomises the big, bold, adventurous creativity and distinctive Sydney glamour of the company it houses. Nearly 30 years on, visitors to the Sydney Theatre Company still feel a palpable sense of anticipation as they make their way down the long walkway to 'the harbour end'.

The Mint

Used as housing, offices and a dispensary between the 1820s and 1850s, the southern wing of the General Hospital was taken over as a branch of the Royal Mint after the gold rush, and opened in 1854. In 1926, the Mint moved to Canberra, and the building became government offices until the 1970s. It was later a museum and most recently has been the headquarters of the Historic Houses Trust.

The Museum of Contemporary Art Australia

Since opening in the old Maritime Services Board building at Sydney Cove in 1991, the Museum of Contemporary Art has taken its place among other Sydney's icons. Located on one of Sydney's, and indeed Australia's, most historically laden sites, the MCA brought contemporary art to the city at a moment when Sydney saw that the living dreams of present-day artists were part of its busy life.

The Private Schools of Roseneath Cottage

Built between 1835 and 1837 as a private family residence, Roseneath Cottage in Parramatta became home to several private schools in the latter half of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries including: Mr Baly's Boarding Establishment for Young Gentlemen; Mrs Mary W M'Ghie's Educational Establishment, a 'first-class boarding school for young ladies'; and St Ronan's, a 'High Class Day and Boarding School for Girls', the bud from which Tara Anglican School for Girls bloomed.

Yarra Bay House

Yarra Bay House, originally built at La Perouse as a cable station, served as a NSW Government children's home from around 1917 until the 1980s. Since 1984 it has been owned by the La Perouse Local Aboriginal Land Council and has been the hub of the La Perouse Aboriginal community.

Yasmar

Yasmar is a rare surviving example of a mid-nineteenth century great house and garden. The estate had only three owners before it was transferred to government control during World War II, and has been empty since 1994.

145 Macquarie Street

Built as a home it has since been converted to office accommodation for the Royal Australasian College of Physicians.

64-66 Pitt Street, Sydney

Curved building on the corner of Pitt, Hunter and O'Connell Streets in the city that was built by the Fairfax family to house the offices of their newspapers, the Sydney Morning Herald and Sydney Mail, in the 1920s, on the site of the former Sydney Morning Herald building. Designed by Manson & Pickering, it was built by Stuart Bros in three stages. The newspaper moved to a new building at Broadway in 1954 and this building was sold to the Bank of New South Wales (later Westpac), when it was known as Wales House. Since the bank sold the property, it has been adapted and used as an office building and a hotel.

814 George Street Haymarket

Eight storey emporium built for Marcus Clark & Co in 1906 at the corner of Pitt and George streets, it remains a commanding presence in Railway Square. Designed by James Nangle, it was modelled on the Fuller building, or flat iron building, in New York.

Abbotsford House

Two-storey Victorian mansion of stuccoed and painted stone with two-storey verandahs on the front and most of the two sides. It retains excellent interior plaster decorations and ceilings and cedar detailing. It became offices for Nestles between 1917 and 1991 before being refurbished as a family home.

Albion Street Children's Court

Former court building constructed by builder CC Coleman of Petersham for 9555 pounds. It was soon overcrowded and outdated with a reputation for violence and was closed when the boys were transferred to Lidcombe in 1983. It has since been used by the Sydney City Mission and community organisations.

Argyle Stores

Sandstone warehouse in The Rocks on land once owned by Mary Reibey, incorporating parts of very early commercial buildings in Sydney and built in stages, the east wing being completed in 1826, the west between 1840 and 1845. In the 1970s it was repurposed as a retail centre.

Aspinall House

Built in 1883 for Joshua Frey Josephson who named it St Killian's, the construction included some elements like a staircase and marble hall tiles from his former home Enmore House. It was converted to a boarding school house when Scots College moved to Bellevue Hill in 1895 and renamed after Arthur Aspinall, the school's first principal.

Fortifications on Bare Island whose faulty construction lead to James Barnet resigning as Colonial Architect. From 1912 they were used as a veteran's home until becoming part of Botany Bay National Park in 1967.

Bellevue

Colonial mansion on Glebe Point of late Victorian Italianate design. It was only used as a home until 1925 when a timber mill was operated from and around the site. When Blackwattle Bay Park was created by landfill in the 1970s only the house was retained due to community lobbying and currently operates as a cafe and community centre.

Benledi

Grand Victorian mansion on the corner of Glebe Point and Wigram Roads in Glebe, built for timber merchant Alexander Kethel. It was later converted to a homeopathic hospital and general community hospital. It is now owned by the City of Sydney and houses the Glebe branch of the public library and other community groups. The adjacent park was the site of the Sydney Hospital for Sick Children, founded in 1880. This was renamed the Royal Alexandra Hospital for Children in 1904 and moved to Camperdown in 1907. The hospital building was also used by the homeopathic hospital before it was razed for the park in 1968.

Bidura

Two storey Victorian house with a former ballroom and large formal garden which was once one among many grand estates along Glebe Point road. From the 1920s the house was used as a girls' home and children's court whilst a remand centre was constructed at the rear in 1980 to facilitate the operation of Bidura Children's Court. It was sold for residential development in 2014.

Brislington

Two storey Georgian dwelling constructed for ex-convict John Hodges using money won in a card game at the nearby Woolpack Inn. It now houses the Medical and Nursing museum.

Broughton Hall

Two storey Regency residence which was modified several times during the 1880s to facilitate its use as a psychiatric clinic.

Broughton House

Residential building which was converted from a warehouse constructed for ironmonger John Keep and Son at the beginning of the twentieth century. It once housed rifles, cutlery, anvils, horse shoes and all manner of ironmongery for the building trade with easy access from King, Kent or Clarence streets.

Burland Hall

Ice skating rink and grand pleasure palace on King Street, Newtown which lasted less than a decade before conversion to a department store as Marcus Clark & Co, and later a cinema. From 1986 to 1995 it housed the Newtown public library before it was converted again to office and retail space. The Art Deco facade was constructed during the 1930s.

Customs House

Public building on Alfred Street at Circular Quay where shipping was cleared and goods passing through the port of Sydney were taxed and cleared for sale or export. A number of Customs House buildings have stood on the site since since 1845 and it was designed and redesigned by three government architects Mortimer Lewis, James Barnet and Walter Liberty Vernon. When the port was busy the House was crowded and noisy, the scene of raised tempers, delays and disputed dealings. It was surrounded by public houses, shipping companies and general maritime activities.

In 1990 the building was closed as a customs departments and in 1994 was leased to the City of Sydney who refurbished the building for use as a multipurpose commercial space that opened in 1995. In 2005 Customs House reopened as the headquarters of the City of Sydney Library and function centre. In April 2019 the City of Sydney purchased the building from the Federal Government.

Genesian Theatre

Small rectangular church in Kent Street designed in a simplified Victorian Free Gothic style. It has served as church, school, hostel and theatre and houses three rare, early Australian stained glass windows by John Falconer dating from 1868. The building was sold by the Catholic Archdiocese in 2019 as part of the redevelopment of the site.

Gowings Building

Built as a department store in Commercial Palazzo style used for inter-war commercial buildings, it has always been associated with Gowings retail business since the first store on the site in 1868. The building now houses retail, restaurant and hotel premises.

Hyde Park Barracks

Georgian brick building at the southern end of Macquarie Street. Designed by colonial architect Francis Greenway to house male convicts, it subsequently became an immigration depot, government asylum, law courts and museum.

John Fairfax building

Building constructed to house the offices and presses of the Sydney Morning Herald, later repurposed for the University of Technology, Sydney.

Justice and Police Museum building

Building on the corner of Phillip and Albert streets at Circular Quay comprising two 19th century courthouses and a former police station. Originally built in the 1850s to house the Water Police Court and Water Police Station, the complex has variously been used by several branches of the police service before conversion in the 1980s to the Police and Justice Museum, operated by Sydney Living Museums.

Kings Cross Theatre

Cinema on the corner of Darlinghurst Road and Victoria Streets at Kings Cross that opened in April 1916. Part of Frank Waddington's chain of picture houses, the cinema seated over 2000 and was described as 'particularly lavish'. A 'junior' nightclub called the Birdcage, run by radio compere Peter Bergin was open briefly in the venue in 1963 after the theatre closed, and soon replaced by John Harrigan's Surf City, that occupied the building from 1963 until 1966 when the building was demolished, to be replaced by the Crest Hotel.

Kinselas

Former drapers which was converted to a funeral chapel by architect C Bruce Dellit. The foyer contains a sculpture by Raymond Hoff and the whole was considered one of the finest Art Deco style funerary spaces in Sydney. The building is now used as a bar and function rooms.

First purpose built hospital for moral therapy treatment of the insane. It became part of Callan park Hospital and is now occupied by Sydney College of the Arts.

Marcus Clark Building

Nine storey department store built in 1913 for Marcus Clark & Co at at 827-837 George Street Railway Square as a furniture showroom, an extension to the existing flagship store at Railway Square on the corner of Pitt and George. In 1928 the building on George Street was modified to become the main store. The store closed in 1965 and the building was purchased by the Sydney Institute of Technology in 1966.

Group of buildings on Observatory Hill comprising the original Georgian military hospital of 1815 and Fort Street school buildings. All had been modified over their 180 years of collective use as public buildings.

Old Darlington School

Gothic Revival style brick school building designed by George Allen Mansfield built in 1878. In use as part of the Darlington Public School until 1975 when the land was transferred to University of Sydney. Surrounding buildings, including the Town Hall, were demolished. The University of Sydney undertook a major restoration of the Darlington School in 2014. As a result of the inspection of old drawings, it was possible for the roof changes of the 1920s to be reversed to the original, nineteenth century roof design. The building is now used by the University as a performance space.

Old Fire Station Glebe

Fire station constructed for the local volunteer brigade. When vacated in 1908 it became factory and is now a community centre.

Old Totalisator building Victoria Park

Only remaining structure of the former Victoria Park Racecourse in Zetland, which operated from 1908 to 1944. Later used as part of British Motor Corporation's motor vehicle factory. The site was re-developed for housing in the 1990s.

Old Tote building Kensington

Building constructed about 1918 to house one of the first fully mechanised totalisators for betting and ticketing at Kensington racecourse.

Palings Warehouse

Office building which used innovative engineering techniques to straddle the Tank Stream and featured safe deposit vaults in the basement. Only the facade still exists as a reminder of the musical heritage of the area.

Queen Victoria Building

Grand domed sandstone arcade in the centre of the city which was saved from demolition in the 1980s and restored to its Federation Romanesque glory. Previously the site had been the municipal markets designated by Governor Macquarie and its current retail tenants continue the tradition.

Railway Institute Building Penrith

A former New South Wales railway facility which was converted to a 126-seat theatre venue in 1976.

Reynolds' Cottages

Workers cottages of brick and sandstone which remain a significant relic of Colonial Georgian style. A third cottage was built of timber at No.32 but has since been rebuilt in brick. Their change of use reflected the economic and social changes of The Rocks through the decades.

Richmond Villa

Colonial Georgian villa of sandstone which originally fronted a garden facing east towards the Domain on the site of the modern extension behind Parliament House in Macquarie Street. It was used as a family home and parliamentary annex before being reconstructed on Kent Street in 1976.

Royleston

Federation mansion which was converted by the State Children's Relief Board in 1922. It became a receiving home providing temporary accommodation for school-age boys who were waiting for children's court hearings or were state wards waiting to be placed in foster care or another institution. In 1936, 904 boys passed through its doors. It housed the Childrens Court from 1983 until 1992 when it was restored for holiday accommodation.

SBW Stables Theatre

Theatre at 10 Nimrod Street Kings Cross converted from an old stable into an intimate and provocative performance space.

Darlinghurst villa built of Sydney sandstone later used as the first St Vincent's Hospital, and then St Vincent's College until it was demolished in 1966.

The Abbey

Originally built as a Presbyterian church on the corner of Parramatta and Glebe Point roads in the 1870s, it was moved stone by stone to 158 Bridge Road in 1927. It is now used as a restaurant and function centre.

Treasury Buildings

Sandstone office blocks in the Italian Palazzo style built on the site of the first Government House garden. It was occupied by a series of government departments before the conversion to an hotel in 1985.

Ultimo power station

The Ultimo Power House on the corner of Harris and William Henry Streets was built in 1898 'in the Italian Renaissance style of architecture' to supply Sydney's new electric tram system, and opened in 1899, producing choking clouds of coal dust over Ultimo. After the trams stopped in 1961, the building became redundant. In 1988 it was modified to house the Technological Museum and reopened as the Powerhouse Museum.

Water Police Court

Courthouse on Phillip Street designed by Colonial Architect Edmund Blacket in 1856 for hearing cases brought by the Water Police. A police station was built next door in 1857, and another court building added to the complex in 1886. In 1990 the buildings were adapted for use as the Police and Justice Museum.

Yarra Bay House

Thought to have been built as a second cable station for use between 1903 and 1917, it has also been a medical ward, girls' industrial school and boys' truancy school before becoming an administrative centre for the Aboriginal land council.

Yasmar house

Grand nineteenth-century house still standing in Haberfield. Situated at 185 Parramatta Road it has variously been a home, army quarters and remand centre.

Marrickville Medal for Conservation

Awarded annually since 1995 for building works that contribute to the preservation of Marrickville's cultural and architectural heritage. Following the amalgamation of the Marrickville Municipality with Ashfield and Leichhardt Municipalities in 2016,to form the Inner West Council, the Medal is now awarded for preservation of the Inner West's cultural and architectural heritage.

Sydney Cove Redevelopment Authority

Its plans for redevelopment were successfully resisted by heritage enthusiasts and the Builders Labourers Federation Green Bans. Much of its work was taken over by the new Sydney Harbour Foreshore Authority in 1999.

Australian Technology Park

Commercial space located on the southern side of the Eveleigh Railway Workshops site in Redfern housing communications and technology companies with conference and events venues. A contentious government decision to sell the site in 2014 brings uncertainty for the future.

Paddington Reservoir Gardens

Urban garden and cultural precinct within the former water reservoir chambers. Once an integral part of Sydney's first water supply system it was decommissioned in late nineteenth century and used for storage and as a garage before conversion to a cultural precinct.
