Celebrating St Patrick's Day in nineteenth-century Sydney

St Patrick's Day has been celebrated in Sydney since the early days of settlement, with observance ranging from horse races and sports, to banquets, boat races and church services. During the 19th century, different groups within Sydney's vibrant Irish community took charge of the day at different times, ensuring it remained part of Sydney's social calendar as the city changed and grew.

Celebrating the end of World War I

After four long years, the declaration of the Armistice at the end of World War One on 11 November 1918 was celebrated across Sydney. More sombre commemorations, Peace Day, followed after the Treaty of Versailles was signed in 1919.

Celebration of Anniversary Day to 1900

Still celebrated as Australia Day, the anniversary of the arrival of the European settlers at Sydney was called Anniversary Day during the nineteenth century. The convict origins of the colony were glossed over and present achievements were emphasised in official functions, but ordinary Sydneysiders marked the holiday with picnics, regattas, sports and fireworks, much as they do today.

Chinese New Year

A Chinese community and family festival for over a century, Sydney's Chinese New Year celebrations now include entertainment by Australian and Chinese performers, Chinatown markets, shopfront decorations, dragon boat races, and a stunning Chinese New Year Parade, featuring floats inspired by the different Asian communities who celebrate the Lunar New Year

Christmas in Martin Place

The Christmas tree in Martin Place, a fixture of Sydney's festive season, is a relatively recent addition to the landscape of the city, dating from 1971 when Martin Place was first converted into a pedestrian space. It is, however, a continuation of older traditions in the city.

Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras

The spectacular Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras in 1983 had its origins in the brutal police response to a much smaller parade in 1978. The subsequent public furore and political activism caused draconian laws to be changed and eventual acceptance of the special place the Mardi Gras holds in Sydney's cultural life.

New Year's Eve

Now one of Sydney's favourite public occasions, New Year's Eve was hardly celebrated before the late nineteenth century, when reliable lighting made outdoor night time revelry safer and more inviting. Sydney's celebrations have moved about the city and taken different forms over time.

The beginnings of Anzac Day commemorations in Sydney

The landing of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) at Gallipoli in 1915 was first commemorated in Sydney on 25 April 1916. It took nearly twenty years for Sydney commemorations to take the form that is now considered traditional, of a march from the Cenotaph in Martin Place, through the streets of Sydney to the Anzac Memorial in Hyde Park.

Mrs Edith Fitzpatrick was born in 1899. She was interviewed in 1986 for the 'Looking Back at Liverpool: An Oral History of the Liverpool Region 1900 to 1960' project. Here she recalls Cracker Night (Empire Day was celebrated with fireworks, which are now outlawed in New South Wales) in the very early twentieth century at her family's remote home near Bringelly

Anniversary Day Regatta

Annual regatta, held on 26 January on the Parramatta River. The first was held in 1837 and this was a major event in Sydney's sporting calendar by the 1850s.

Arrival in Sydney of Ross and Keith Smith, who had flown from London to Darwin at the end of 1919 in a Vickers Vimy biplane, the first plane to do so in under 30 days. Due to mechanical difficulties they did not arrive in Sydney until 14 February 1920.

August Moon festival

Major festival in the Chinese calendar, held on the 15th day of the 8th lunar month. It usually falls in September in the western calendar.

Australia Day

Public holiday marking the landing of the first fleet in Port Jackson, celebrated in Sydney throughout the nineteenth century as Anniversary Day, and gradually taken up by other states after Federation. The public holiday has been held on 26 January nationwide since 1994.

Annual community event held in the city at Christmas time. It was first held in Hyde Park near the War Memorial in 1946 (apart from 1947 when it was postponed due to rain and held on Good Friday at the Showground instead. The festival moved to the Domain in 1983.

Spectacular festival organised by the Sydney Chinese community as part of the sesquicentenary celebrations to publicise China's plight following the Japanese invasion of Nanking the previous year.

Empire Day

The celebration of Queen Victoria's birthday on May 24 was renamed Empire Day in 1903 after her death in 1901. It was celebrated throughout the British Empire culminating in fireworks and bonfires in the evening. The last celebration of Empire Day in Australia took place in 1958. The modern Queen's Birthday public holiday is a separate event observed on the second Monday of June.

Mrs Edith Fitzpatrick recalls Cracker Night in the early twentieth century near Bringelly, interviewed in 1986

Mrs Edith Fitzpatrick was born in 1899. She was interviewed in 1986 for the 'Looking Back at Liverpool: An Oral History of the Liverpool Region 1900 to 1960' project. Here she recalls Cracker Night (now outlawed) in the very early twentieth century at her family's remote home near Bringelly.
Transcript

EDITH: We always had a bonfire and the bigger boys used to sometimes play up, they'd light our fire before it was time. But we used to have good fun. Different families around used to come, bring their crackers and we'd have a real good Cracker Night. There was nothing rough about it in those days, the boys, there was no throwing crackers at children like they do today. No. It was just good fun. There was none of that vandalism that there is today.

INTERVIEWER: Can you remember some of the names of the people who came?

EDITH: Oh yes, the Brown family, Anderson and the Gillows. They were all our neighbours. But of course they're all gone now. There's none of them, I don't think there is any of them out there now. Because that's a long time ago.
