Colonial architecture

Brislington

Brislington is Parramatta's oldest existing dwelling house and stands on land once used by the Darug-speaking Burramatta people. Initially a family residence, Brislington was a medical practice for almost a hundred years, followed by the Parramatta District Hospital's Nurses' Home up until the 1970s. Since 1983 the building has been home to the Brislington Medical and Nursing Museum.

Cadman's cottage

Possibly designed by Francis Greenway, Cadman's cottage housed John Cadman, government coxswain, from 1827 until 1845. It was subsequently used by the Water Police and the Sydney Sailors' Home, and is now a museum.

Commissariat Stores

The Commissariat held a strategic role in the economy of the early colony, supplying and storing foodstuffs and other necessities including 'liquor, hardware and other goods' for the population.

First Government House

A two-storey brick house, Government House was the most impressive building in the early colony. It was not well-built however, and required frequent repairs. Plans to replace it were first suggested in 1817, but the new Government House was not completed until 1845.

Hyde Park Barracks

From convict barracks to female immigration depot to asylum for destitute women, Hyde Park Barracks has witnessed and revealed much of Sydney's social history.

Hyde Park Barracks archaeology

Sydney's first 'big dig' at Hyde Park Barracks, and subsequent archaeological work, produced one of the best collections of nineteenth-century institutional material in the world. These items illuminate the lives and interests of the thousands of women who passed through this building during its history as an immigration depot and destitute asylum.

Juniper Hall

Built on the ridge at Paddington, with views to the harbour and Botany Bay, Juniper Hall was the home of wealthy distiller and ex-convict Robert Cooper, and his large family. It was later used as a school, public building and court, and later subdivided into flats, before the National Trust of Australia (NSW) bought and restored it.

Reynolds' cottages

Built by convict labour in 1829, Reynolds' cottages have been used for many different purposes as the city around them changed and grew.

Roseneath Cottage

Roseneath, an elegant Colonial Georgian style residence, was built between 1835 and 1837 as a family home for Scottish emigrant, Janet Templeton and her children. Overlooking the northern section of Parramatta Park (formerly Governor's Domain), the building housed several private schools in the latter half of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

The Mint

Used as housing, offices and a dispensary between the 1820s and 1850s, the southern wing of the General Hospital was taken over as a branch of the Royal Mint after the gold rush, and opened in 1854. In 1926, the Mint moved to Canberra, and the building became government offices until the 1970s. It was later a museum and most recently has been the headquarters of the Historic Houses Trust.

The first Government House: building on Phillip’s ‘good foundation’

The first Government House was not a simple singular structure but a complex with a yard, outbuildings, guardhouse, garden and greater domain. It was a home, an office and a venue for public and private entertaining, but also a symbol of British authority, with all that that meant to different people, both then and now.

Ultimo House

Demolished in 1932, Ultimo House was then claimed to be Sydney's oldest residence. It had been one of the most prestigious houses in the colony.

Australian Subscription Library and Reading Room

Building on the corner of Bent and Macquarie Streets constructed in 1845 to house the Australian Subscription Library. The subscription library ran into financial difficulties and was taken over by the state government to became the Sydney Free Public Library in 1869. An addition to the building was made in the 1880s as the collection and number of readers grew. In 1895 the name changed again to the Public Library of New South Wales. The Public Library collection and staff moved to the new extension of the Mitchell Library building in June 1942. The building on Bent Street was demolished in 1969.

Horbury House

Two Georgian terraces, modified to become one office building, at 171-173 Macquarie Street. They were originally part of a group of eight prestigious, three storey terraces built for Ounsley Condell in 1842. The row was sold to Thomas Holt in 1843 who named it Horbury Terrace after his birthplace in Yorkshire. When the row sold again in 1845, tenants included Isaac Nathan, Robert Lowe and Edward Broadhurst. The other six houses have been demolished over time, the last in the 1930s.

Historic house built on one of the early grants in the Ryde area, and still standing in 2010.

Two storey Georgian dwelling constructed for ex-convict John Hodges using money won in a card game at the nearby Woolpack Inn. It now houses the Medical and Nursing museum.

Bungarribee House

Colonial homestead built on the Bungarribee estate in the Prospect area in 1827 by John Campbell. It was demolished in 1957.

Nineteenth-century Sydney's 'finest private residence' in Macquarie Street. Built by merchant Thomas Burdekin in 1842, its demolition in 1933 was an early catalyst for the heritage movement.

Two storey stucco gentleman's residence, built in brick on stone foundations. Of colonial Georgian style, its design is attributed to Francis Greenway. It was later used as a school, laundry, boarding house and government offices, and as a convent and hospital. It remains significant as one of the oldest houses in Sydney.

Residence for the first nine Governors of NSW, which was the first major building in the colony. The first permanent building in the colony, it had two storeys built of bricks and stone comprising six rooms, two cellars and a rear staircase. In front of the house was a garden where many imported plant species were grown and the first orchard planted. The Museum of Sydney, on the corner of Bridge and Phillip Streets, was built on its site.

Single storey lath and plaster cottage which deteriorated rapidly over a decade and was replaced further along the ridge above the township.

Glover Cottages, Kent Street

Two stone Georgian cottages at 120-124 Kent Street in Millers Point that were part of a group of buildings built by stonemason and former convict Thomas Glover in the 1820s. Between 1967 and 1974 the buildings were used by Fort Street High School. An addition to the back of the building was built in 1979 and the buildings restored for non-residential use.

Hambledon Cottage

Rendered sandstock brick cottage in the Colonial Georgian style built on Elizabeth Farm for the Macarthur governess Penelope Lucas. Now owned by Parramatta Council it is occupied by the Parramatta Historical Society and is open to the public as a museum. It is located on Hassall Street Parramatta near Gregory Place.

Horsley House

Colonial farm estate of homestead and outbuildings which is a rare example of an 1830s estate. Situated on a land grant to Major George Johnston for his part in suppressing the Castle Hill uprising, the estate was developed by his daughter and husband Blanche and George Weston.

Georgian brick building at the southern end of Macquarie Street. Designed by colonial architect Francis Greenway to house male convicts, it subsequently became an immigration depot, government asylum, law courts and museum.

Judge's House Kent Street

Elegant home at 531 Kent Street that was built for surveyor William Harper in 1827. It is the only example of an 1820s Colonial Georgian single storey bungalow to survive in the city. It was leased to the judge James Dowling from 1828 until 1831. In 1879 the house was sold to the City Night Refuge and Soup Kitchen trustees, who had been leasing the property since 1868. In the 1970s some of the outbuildings were demolished and the house sold to commercial owners and converted for use as a restaurant.

Juniper Hall

Built as 'the finest house in Sydney' this two storey Georgian home of eight rooms had a cellar, stables and servant's quarters. Known between 1831 and 1945 as Ormond House. By 1852 it was a home for destitute children and then a children's court. Almost demolished in 1921,a public outcry saw it redeveloped for commercial use with shops replacing front garden which were only removed in the late 1980s. It is now used as partial residence and gallery after the Moran family took a 99 year lease in 2012.

Sandstone administration building on Bridge Street. The building is in the Renaissance Revival style, with 12 niches on each facade with sculptures of explorers and legislators. The most recent addition is that of James Meehan who was added in 2010. In 2015 the government sold a 103-year lease for this and the neighbouring Education Department building to the Singapore based Pontiac Land Group to develop a hotel.

Lieutenant Governor's House

In 1788, Major Robert Ross built the Lieutenant Governor's House, a small single storey cottage that was the colony's first substantial stone building. After Ross was recalled in 1791, the house was occupied by Major Francis Grose, who, possibly inspired by buildings he'd seen while in service in America or India, added the colony's first verandah to the building in 1793. In 1802, Peron described the house as having a fine garden behind it. At different times in the 1800s the building housed the Superintendent of Police and the Sydney Hotel and Coffee House. It stood close to the location of the modern intersection of Grosvenor and George Streets, and was demolished in 1831, replaced by Samuel Lyon's auction rooms and stores.

Old Manse Farm, Pitt Town

Single storey Georgian brick farmhouse built c1819-1821 on Punt Road, Pitt Town. It was purchased in 1828 as a manse for the Reverend John McGarvie, the first incumbent of the Ebenezer Presbyterian Church. The punt across the river was part of the property. The house was damaged in the floods of 1867 but repaired and remained in use as a manse for another ten years. Leased to a farmer after 1877, the building was sold by the church in 1959. It is the earliest surviving Australian housing used by clergy.

Old St James parsonage

Two storey stone house built in about 1819 on land at the corner of Macquarie and King Streets, now the corner of Macquarie Street and Queens Square and the site of the Law Courts building. The site had been owned by former convict Thomas Clarkson, and the house may have been built by him before the land passed D'arcy Wentworth in about 1819. Possibly occupied by Wentworth for a short period before being leased, and subsequently purchased, by the government in 1820 to be used as the residence for the Surveyor General, John Oxley. King George IV's monogram G.R. was carved in stone over the entrance. The land was acquired by St James Anglican church in 1838 and was used as a parsonage until it fell into disrepair in the late 1880s and was demolished in 1889. The site was then leased by the church to raise funds for its maintenance and St James Chambers was built.

The Australian Museum was also briefly accommodated in a room in the parsonage for a period in the early 1840s.

Ranger's cottage

Reynolds' Cottages

Workers cottages of brick and sandstone which remain a significant relic of Colonial Georgian style. A third cottage was built of timber at No.32 but has since been rebuilt in brick. Their change of use reflected the economic and social changes of The Rocks through the decades.

Building on lower George Street that housed the offices of the Sydney Gazette and New South Wales Advertiser, between 1810 and 1824. The newspaper was founded in 1803 by publisher and printer George Howe. The building on lower George Street (then numbered 96) was a warehouse, store and residence. It was owned in 1810 by Edward Wills, and subsequently by his widow Sarah Wills, who married Howe in 1812. In 1921, the Royal Australian Historical Society placed a commemorative porcelain plaque near the intersection of George and Alfred Streets to mark the location of the building.

Georgian building at 16 O'Connell Street, on the corner of Hunter Street Parramatta. Erected as an inn it served many purposes over the centuries including use as a hostel for homeless men by the 1890s. With the two buildings at 12 and 14 O'Connell Street, it forms the Travellers Rest Inn Group.

Trinity Hall, Argyle Place

Former school building now used as a parish hall on the northern side of the Holy Trinity Anglican Church at Millers Point. It was built between 1846 and 1860 to house the school the church had established in 1844 in nearby rented premises. In the 1940s and 1950s the hall was also used as a Church of England National Emergency Fund hostel for servicemen.

House built in 1804 by surgeon John Harris on his estate at Ultimo, and extended in 1814 by the convict architect Francis Greenway. It was Greenway's first colonial commission.

Water Police Court

Courthouse on Phillip Street designed by Colonial Architect Edmund Blacket in 1856 for hearing cases brought by the Water Police. A police station was built next door in 1857, and another court building added to the complex in 1886. In 1990 the buildings were adapted for use as the Police and Justice Museum.

Described as a 'very useful building' when it opened in Feburary 1858, the ground floor consisted of a guard room on one side and an office on the other with cells for the prisoners at the read. On the first floor there was a barrack room and three rooms for the inspectors. The water police occupied the building until 1913 when a new headquarters was built at Dawes Point and it became known as Philip Street Police Station. In 1990 it became part of the Police and Justice Museum managed by Sydney Living Museums.

Architect and builder who came to Sydney as a free settler and designed and built many of the colony's grandest houses before retiring to his farm on the Macleay River in northern New South Wales.

Collingwood House and estate

Estate and house at Liverpool on the Georges River. Also known as Bunker's Cottage or Bunker' Farm, the house was built around 1810. Modified several times, it remains an important example of the transition of the area from an agricultural estate to an industrial estate during the nineteenth century. It is the fourth oldest surviving house in Australia.

Sydney Gaol

In 1797 two gaols were built in the colony, one at Sydney Cove and the other at Parramatta. Both were timber buildings and both were destroyed by fire.The gaol at Sydney Cove was built of timber logs provided by settlers. With a thatched roof, It had 22 cells and a separate brick building for debtors. The gaol was destroyed by fire in early 1799 and then rebuilt in sandstone. Behind a high wall on the corner of George and Essex Streets in the Rocks, it housed both male and female prisoners. Executions took place in its grounds, viewable by the public who could watch from a nearby hill. The gaol beccame overcrowded and dilapidated but stayed open until 1841 when prisoners were removed to the new Darlinghust Gaol and subsequently demolished.
