Lighthouses

Barrenjoey

Located in the traditional lands of the Garigal people, Barrenjoey was an important gateway to Broken Bay, the Hawkesbury River and Pittwater when most access to Sydney was by ship. The lighthouse remains a reminder of this important role.

Barrenjoey lighthouse

Designed by colonial architect James Barnet, the Barrenjoey lighthouse has lit up the entrance to Broken Bay for over 120 years.

Grotto Point lighthouse

Grotto Point became an important part of navigational safety with the erection of a lighthouse in 1910.

Hornby lighthouse

Constructed after two disastrous shipwrecks, Hornby lighthouse has offered safe passage into Sydney Harbour since 1858.

Lighthouses

Sydney's 14 lighthouses guide shipping through the Heads of the harbour, into Botany Bay, and into Broken Bay, as well as around the harbour.

Macquarie lighthouse

Early colonial Sydney relied on the safe arrival of ships bringing goods and supplies into the harbor and the construction of lighthouses has a long history. Today a Sydney landmark, the Macquarie lighthouse still stands proud and tall against the dramatic beauty of South Head.
