Lawson, Louisa

Writer, publisher, inventor and activist, Louisa Lawson influenced Sydney life at the turn of the twentieth century in many ways. At her death, she was called 'the mother of womanhood suffrage in New South Wales'.

Paling, William Henry

Born in the Netherlands to a family of musicians, William Paling became one of Sydney's foremost businessmen and philanthropists.

Suburban Herald

Part of the process of suburbanisation in Sydney, local newspapers helped define communities and produce local patriotism. The Suburban Herald was an important advocate for the northern suburbs of Sydney between 1925 and 1938, with a readership of over 50,000 people.

Taylor, Florence

Described as 'the most remarkable woman in the Empire', Florence Taylor was one of Sydney's first women architects, a publisher, writer, town planner and socialite.

The Bulletin

Australia's longest-running magazine, published in Sydney from 1880, became a conduit between rural Australia and the cities, and provided an outlet for the work of many of Sydney's best known writers and artists.

Wardell, Robert

As founder of Australia's first independent newspaper, Robert Wardell's achievements have been much written about but his personal life - wound up with adultery, murder and disrepute - has been less well covered.

Compilation published in 1919 of some cartoons and stories which had appeared in Smiths Weekly featuring Cecil Hartt's World War I Australian soldier character 'The Digger'.

Field sports &c. &c. of the native inhabitants of New South Wales 1813

Published in London by Edward Orme in 1813 and purportedly written and illustrated by John Heaviside Clark, this book was the first to be published about Aboriginal life and customs. It is unknown whose work the plates are based on but it seems unlikely that Clark ever visited Australia. The plates and essay were also included in later works like Foreign Field Sports, Fisheries, Sporting Anecdotes.

Notes on the Aborigines of New South Wales : with personal reminiscences of the tribes formerly living in the neighbourhood of Sydney and the surrounding districts by George Thornton and Richard Hill was published in 1892 for the New South Wales Commissioners for the World's Columbian Exposition, Chicago in 1893. It included personal observations by the two men on the Aboriginal people who had lived in the Sydney area.

Originally printed in a lean-to shed at the back of Government House, the newspaper moved to different premises in Macquarie Place in 1808 and then to a building on lower George Street in December 1810. In 1824 the printery moved again to a larger two storey building further south on George Street on the corner of Charlotte Place.

The flagship store remained in the same location after the original George Street store was demolished and replaced by 'The Block', or 'The Dymock's Building' in the 1920s.

Banker, charity worker and editor who used his editorial position as an advocate of a free press, representative government and trial by common jury. In November 1819 he was appointed to the position of the coroner of the territory of New South Wales by Governor Lachlan Macquarie, for which he was paid an annual salary of £80. He resigned from the position in October 1821 and went to his property at Lake Bathurst near Goulburn. On his return to Sydney in 1826 he founded the newspaper The Monitor with Edward Hill, leading to many disputes with Governor Ralph Darling and convictions for libel.

Writer, newspaper proprietor and advocate for women's rights and womanhood suffrage.

Lewin, John William

Australia's first professional artist. A talented artist with an interest in scientific studies, Lewin decided to travel to Australia to paint its natural history. He arrived in Sydney in 1800 and was encouraged by patrons including Governor Philip Gidley King, Governor Lachlan Macquarie, William Paterson and Sir Joseph Banks. He published Australia's first illustrated book 'Birds of New South Wales' in 1813. In 1810 Governor Lachlan Macquarie appointed him to the role of coroner in the town of Sydney and of the County of Cumberland, which he held until his death in 1819. The headstone to his grave was moved from the Devonshire Street Cemetery to Pioneer Memorial Park in Botany Cemetery in 1976.

Waugh, James William

Scottish publisher, bookseller and stationer in Sydney who wrote and published The Stranger's Guide to Sydney and the Australian Almanac.

Waugh migrated to Australia with his parents and sisters in 1840 to join his brothers David and Robert. The family settled in the Illawarra region. Waugh planned to become a publisher as his father had been in Edinburgh, and moved to Sydney where he worked for bookseller William Piddington before setting up on his own in November 1851, initially at 14 Hunter Street. He published, among other things, a volume of Henry Parkes' poetry, religious, science and art magazines, almanacs and tourist guides as well as a commercial directory to Sydney. He married Mary Lee Stobo in 1856. In late 1862, Waugh closed the business and moved to Bowenfels with his growing family. Waugh was insolvent by 1866 and the family moved to Kiama where they ran the fashionable boarding house Waratah House on Teralong Street. Waugh was also offering his services as a bookkeeper and Latin tutor, and was involved in the Kiama School of Arts. He died at home from 'pulmonary consumption', or tubercolosis, at the age of 48.
